You can join our Troop if you are 11 through 17 years of age. You can also join if they have earned the Cub Scout "Arrow of Light" award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade and are at least 10.
Dates and times for all meetings can be found on the Troop calendar via Scoutbook
The Troop meets every Thursday from 6:45pm to 8:15pm at the Scout Lodge, 78 Battle Street, Somers, CT.
An Adult Leaders meeting is held once per month on Wednesdays. During the meeting, adult leaders, parents and volunteers plan the logistics to run the troop.
A patrol leader's council (PLC) is comprised of the senior patrol leader, who oversees the meeting, the assistant senior patrol leader, all patrol leaders, quartermaster, scribe, and the troop guide. The patrol leader's council plans the yearly troop program during summer camp. The PLC meets monthly to fine-tune the plans for the upcoming month.
Troop 387 is scout led and patrol based. The Troop is led by a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL). Each Scout belongs to a patrol that is led by a Patrol Leader (PL). Adults involved have completed BSA adult training for their positions and child protection and abuse-avoidance training.
Registration is typically $150 per scout, or $165 if you wish to subscribe to Scout Life. Payment is due in September of the current scouting year. Checks can be made out to "Somers Troop 387".
The parents or guardian of each scout should assure regular participation of you scout at our Troop meetings and events. If any parent or guardian would like to join our leadership team, please note the BSA conducts a background check for registered Troop members.
Out-of-pocket start-up cost is about $125 for a Class A Uniform. Before you make a purchase, the Troop has several gently used uniforms you may be able to use.
We encourage and motivate Scouts to achieve the rank of First Class before their second year of Summer Camp. Advancements are taught by Scouts in your patrol. Typically Scouts will teach a subject one week followed by a demonstration the following week.
Your first Rank to earn is SCOUT.
Step 1: Complete a Troop 387 application and turn it in with your registration at your first meeting.
Step 2: Obtain a Boy Scout Handbook.
Step 3: Scouts work towards completing the RANK requirements. Scouts FIRST CLASS and above may sign-off a requirement in the Handbook.
An outdoor activity involving camping typically occurs once per month. See your Patrol Leader or SPL for details. Each scout needs a sleeping bag, sleeping bag, appropriate shoes, rain jacket, daypack and a water bottle. Detailed equipment required for each camping trip will be discussed prior to the event.
