Dr. Rory A. Pfund is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Memphis. He serves as the Clinic and Research Director of the Tennessee Institute for Gambling Education & Research. Dr. Pfund is also a licensed clinical psychologist in Tennessee.
Dr. Pfund's research program focuses on evaluating and personalizing psychological treatments for individuals with addiction. His research uses a variety of methods, including randomized controlled trials, secondary data analysis, and meta-analysis.
Dr. Pfund is the author or co-author on over 50 peer-reviewed publications. He was the recipient of the Scientific Achievement Award from the International Center for Responsible Gaming, as well as the recipient of grants from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), the International Center for Responsible Gaming, and the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. Dr. Pfund serves the Associate Editor for Addiction, the Associate Editor for Journal of Gambling Studies, and a Consulting Editor for Psychology of Addictive Behaviors.
Dr. Pfund grew up in rural Pennsylvania near Scranton. He completed a BS in psychology at University of Scranton with Dr. John C. Norcross in 2013. In 2020, he completed a MS and PhD in clinical psychology at University of Memphis with Dr. James P. Whelan, and he completed his clinical internship at University of Mississippi Medical Center. Finally, he completed a NIAAA T32 postdoctoral fellowship at the University of New Mexico's Center on Alcohol, Substance Use, and Addictions (CASAA) with Dr. Katie Witkiewitz in 2022.
