Indiana Department of Transportation, in association with Purdue University has an Accelerated Pavement Testing facility that operates in an environmentally controlled building. The test pit, 6.1 x 6.1 x 1.8m (20 x 20x 6 ft) allows control of the water table and heating to 50ºC. Loads can be applied by a dual-wheel or super-single half axle traveling at 8km/h (5 mph) uni- or bi-directionally. The loading machine will undergo major upgrades in 2005.
