Casablanca
Tour of Hassan II Mosque, Saturday, June 25
by Elaine Dasher
Our tour of the Hassan II Mosque by the sea in Casablanca began with a tour of the museum, where examples of various design elements were shown: plaster, wood, metalwork, etc. We were also able to see the display room where the work of students from the art academy at the mosque was displayed. Ultimately, we removed our shoes and went inside the mosque--a place where as many as 200,000 people gather to pray during Ramadan.

The ablutions room beneath the mosque
All materials used in building the mosque were from Morocco with the exception of the Venetian chandeliers.
The fountain beneath the floor of the mosque is visible because of the light. Water flows in in the lighted area and along adjacent channels in the floor of the mosque.
