Orchha is a small town in the north of Madhya Pradesh state, India. Orchha was founded in the 16th century by the Bundela Rajput chief Rudra Pratap Singh. There are several historical places to visit in Orchha which has maintained the culture and legends of the rulers of the Bundela dynasty.

90+ sites. The stars indicate my rating of a site (***** = really worth visiting).

When I decided to visit Orchha I kept finding names/references to the many sites in Orchha.

However, there was no single source that listed all the sites. Hope this guide helps others in that regard.

The top attractions

Ram Raja Mandir, the heartbeat of Orchha, is located right in the center of the town. To visit these sites you need a Orchha Pass (see below).

My favorite places in Orchha

Apart from the 'top attractions' these are the places I really liked :

Orchha Fort  (46 sites)

Sites in the middle of the fort (near Raj Mahal).

Sites to the north (of Raj Mahal).

Sites to the south (of Raj Mahal).

Sites just outside the fort.

East of Orchha Fort (3 sites)

These sites are on a island in the Betwa river close to the fort.

I could not go here. It involves crossing a stream by walking over rocks.

The route to this place starts at a fort gate near Bakas Rai Ki Kothi.

Ram Raja Mandir Complex (13 sites)

North of Ram Raja Mandir Complex (9 sites)

West of Ram Raja Mandir Complex (12 sites)

South of Ram Raja Mandir Complex (7 sites)

Royal Chhatris (6+ sites)

South of Royal Chhatris (5+ sites)

Sites I could not locate or could not visit (12 sites)

The Orchha Pass

To visit the top attractions in Orchha (except the Ram Raja Mandir) you will need to buy a Orchha Pass. This is available near the entrance to the fort. In late 2022 it was Rs 50 for Indian nationals. Preserve the pass since it is required to visit the best places in Orchha.

Similarly a Parking Ticket/Pass is available. Valid at all parking zones in Orchha. Rs 30 I think.

The Orchha Home-stay links responsible tourism with community development. We offer not just board and lodging but an intercultural experience. What better way to discover India than to stay with an Indian family - not a privileged one, but a family of farmers, artisans and labourers who represent the majority of Indians. We want you to experience the hospitality of ordinary Indians who are not professionals of the tourist industry.

You will stay in one of the six homes in a simple tiled room that is well adapted to the local climate, clean and comfortable ...    - Friends of Orchha Homestay
