SS Germanic
Mary departed from Queenstown to New York City on 3rd April 1902 aboard the SS Germanic. She was accompanied by a Kate Flynn also from Collooney, both listed as servants. They were heading for 555 Greenwich Street NY where Kate's brother Michael lived. Interestingly Mary gave the same address but c/o a "cousin" Maggie Flynn.
That address crops up later when it is given as Michael O'Connell's address in 1909 when John was emigrating and 1913 when Elizabeth was arriving back.
Little is known of Mary's life in New York. When Michael emigrated the year after Mary in 1903, he is shown as having a sister Mary in 121 Central Avenue Tarrytown, a town well up the Hudson river. She had a son Lawrence born in 1911. His story, as told to Fr Willie, is that he doesn't remember much of his first 5 years. From there he says his mother brought him to a series of schools/institutions/orphanages where he went to school and his mother worked at them to pay for his tuition. These included Sedgwick Ave in the Bronx, Staten Island for a year, then Nanuet in upstate New York for a couple of years and finally Peekskill. I have found 1920 census records for Mary and Lawrence. (Quite a lot of moving around) During his time in this final school in 1926 his mother was involved in an accident when she was hit by a fuel truck while crossing the street. This left her with injuries to her gall bladder that remained to the end of her life. He was transferred from there, probably because she wasn't able to contact the school and thus was no longer paying/earning his keep and lost touch with her for some time. Eventually he tracked her down through contacting a friend of hers whose address he remembered. She was working in a convent on the Upper West side of Manhattan. It was only after that she told him he had relatives in New York. He met John & Michael and their families and later Bridget ( who he said was working on Long Island) a couple of times. He was staying with John's family when his mother Mary died in 1931. She passed away in Lenox Hill Hospital on October 21st 1931, following a short illness. Her death cert states she was a laundress. Her last address is 43 East 80th St. and she is buried in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx
