The Engineering department is where innovation and technical expertise come together.
With eight specialized areas, this team takes on the challenge of designing a competitive race car that meets the highest standards of performance and safety.
Their work is driven by creativity, precision, and collaboration, all aimed at pushing the limits of what’s possible in motorsport engineering.
This area is responsible for designing the chassis and suspension system of the vehicle, focusing on ensuring both safety and high performance. Our approach combine structural integrity with dynamic handling, allowing the car to perform exceptionally well under demanding conditions while keeping the driver and passengers protected. Every design decision was made with precision, balancing strength, weight, and responsiveness to achieve optimal results on the road and track.
Powertrain is responsible for designing the system that drives the car: the electric motor, transmission, and differential. Its goal is to deliver power efficiently and reliably, enabling immediate acceleration and reaching top speed. This area is essential to ensure precise response, strong traction, and competitive on-track performance. It is the heart of the car, where acceleration is born.
In the Aerodynamics area, we focus on designing and optimizing components such as the front and rear wings, undertray, and bodywork. Our goal is to enhance the car’s performance by increasing downforce and reducing drag. We run CFD simulations in Ansys Fluent to obtain aerodynamic coefficients, which we then use to validate the whole design using OptimumLap. A design is considered successful if the lap time on the FSUK Endurance Track is improved compared to a non-aero configuration. In the final development phase, we concentrate on minimizing lap time as much as possible.
The Vehicle Dynamics area is responsible for two main tasks.
The first is participating in the static event Lap Time Simulation, where virtual vehicle simulations are carried out to optimize lap times.
The second is the development of the Model Validation Test Plan, a technical document that explains to the engineering coordinator how the simulations will be validated and how the data obtained can be applied in real-world scenarios to ensure reliability and accuracy.
At Brakes & Tyres, we are responsible for the first task of the season. We not only select the brakes and tyres, but also validate that they work properly with the car for each season. Additionally, we perform the vehicle dynamics calculations that all other engineering areas rely on throughout the season.
Finally, we design, optimize, and validate the pedal box.
Cooling is in charge of designing thermal management systems for powertrain components such as the motor, batteries, controller, and brakes. Our goal is to maintain optimal temperatures that ensure the vehicle’s performance, efficiency, and, above all, safety.
In the Steering subsystem, our goal is to provide the driver with full control over the car’s direction. To achieve this, we focus on ensuring safety, comfort, and reliability. Each component is designed to offer precise feedback and responsiveness under the different driving conditions the driver is exposed to.
The electronics area manages all electrical systems of the car, including high and low voltage components. For high voltage, the area runs simulations to size the accumulator and define its configuration. On the low voltage side, we design, validate, and manufacture PCBs for safety circuits and telemetry. We also benchmark and select components, plan cable sizing, and organize all electrical connections.
