It is important to remember that karate is a contact sport, and as with any contact sport, there comes the risk of injury.
As our instructors are trained to help you train in a manner that is safe, you can be assured that the risk of injury is minimal, but can still occur. It is important that all club members have up to date KUGB licenses and have signed the club waiver before engaging in more extreme sparring work. A number of our members are first aid trained and therefore, superficial injuries can be dealt with swiftly.
Safety Equipment
Any freestyle kumite participant is expected to have gloves and a gumshield for training. At competitions, males over 12 years old should wear a groin guard and females over 12 should have a chest guard. Those under 16 can choose not to wear these at theirs and their parents' discretion.
