55 PHRASING STUDIES

for TROMBONE

55 PHRASING STUDIES for TROMBONE  by Jaroslav Cimera (pub. Belwin Mills, 1958- currently pub. by Cherry Classics) is an incredible collection of 60- yes, its not 55- short etudes that focus on musical phrasing. They are filled with opportunities to incorporate alternate positions to help make the legato lines easier to play. Some of the dynamic choices are written, and many were made by the performer. Cimera includes phrase (breath) marks in the book, and most are followed. There are occasions where some are skipped as they occur at the peak of a dynamic line, and there are a few additional ones purposely added as well.  Most of these pieces are performed with a metronome at the tempo provided in the music- even when there are rubato sections. (Rubato means the tempo gets faster and slower based on the phrase.) The goal was to perform these tunes as musically as possible.
