American Traditional tattooing (or "old school") is one of the most enduring and recognizable styles in the world with a fascinating history that spans decades. It originated in the early 20th century in the United States and was widely popular among those serving in the armed forces, particularly the navy. Tattoo designs in this style often represent nautical images such as anchors, lighthouses and ships through the use of bold lines and distinct colour schemes.
Today, American Traditional style enjoys a large following in West Yorkshire and has taken on new forms and designs over the years. This project explores the appeal of American Traditional style in the region speaking with tattoo artists and their human canvases, and what this says about the West Yorkshire spirit. Central themes in our interviews included versatility, pride and boldness.
This project was conducted by Dr Douglas Schulz and Dr M Sudhir Selvaraj from the School of Law and Social Sciences at the University of Bradford. It was supported by REIDA funding as part of the University of Bradford's engagement with Bradford City of Culture 2025.
The researchers extend their thanks to participants for the time and stories, and in particular, the team at Snake and Tiger in Leeds.
