If you are not yet a percussionist, but are thinking about becoming one, this page can help you figure out whether it is a good fit for you!
Students who are well-suited for percussion usually show the following characteristics:
They are excellent self-managers!
They have an excellent sense of rhythm and pulse
They have experience with piano lessons (not required, but helpful)
They are determined and hard-working!
They ENJOY watching and listening to percussion instruments! This is the most important factor!
Percussionists serve a very unique and critical role in the ensemble!
There is a large variety of instruments to learn
Percussionists often create interesting sound effects and colors
There are many opportunities for solos... or least to be the only person in the room playing a certain instrument!
Because there are usually very many students interested, and a limited number of spots, your band director will likely hold percussion try-outs, involving a process similar to the one shown in the video here.
For practice, see if you can successfully follow along! If not, percussion might not be the best instrument choice for you, but rest assured there is an instrument for you!
