Emily Jolly is a Ph.D. candidate working in the lab of Dr. Allen Place at the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology. Her research interests are two-fold. She is primarily interested in 1) how microorganisms employ adaptive mechanisms to be resistant and/or resilient against stress and 2) how environmental conditions influence whether host-microbe relationships are mutualistic or parasitic. Emily got her start in Dr. Corrine Richards-Zawacki's lab where she completed an undergraduate senior thesis looking at how factors such as life stage, habitat, and host species may influence differences in Batrochochytrium dendrobatidis zoospore release among amphibians. Currently, her work focuses on the coral-algal symbiosis and how metabolic, physiological, and morphological diversity across Symbiodiniaceae may cause variations in the bleaching response. She received the University of Maryland Dean's Fellowship for the 2022-2023 school year and is currently a Link Fellow with the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Florida.
