Ethan discovered his love for chess during the COVID-19 pandemic while still in high school, and what began as a curiosity quickly grew into a lasting passion. Since then, he has dedicated years to studying the game — not only to improve his own play, but also to better share that knowledge with others. He is a proud and active member of the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club, where he regularly participates and steps into leadership roles to help meetings run smoothly and create a welcoming environment for all.
The founder of The Pawn Project, Truett, met Ethan through SVCC club meetings and has greatly benefited from Ethan’s encouragement, consistency, and positive presence. Truett is proud to now share Ethan with The Pawn Project community.
Ethan is also a member of the United States Chess Federation and has expanded into competitive, rated tournament play over the past couple of years. His continued growth as both a player and leader reflects a genuine love for the game and a commitment to learning.
Ethan embodies the mission of The Pawn Project through his willingness to give back, lead by example, and support players at every stage of their chess journey. He represents the idea that passion, dedication, and encouragement can make a meaningful difference — both on and off the board.
Janis discovered her love for chess in elementary school, and the game has been a meaningful bridge to thoughtful, curious, and engaging people ever since. What began as an early interest has grown into a lasting passion — one that continues to shape both her personal journey and the way she connects with others through the game.
Janis serves on the board of the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club as Coach Coordinator. She is especially passionate about mentoring young players and encouraging greater participation of females in chess. She ensures the game feels welcoming, confidence-building, and enjoyable for everyone who walks through the door.
Janis embodies the mission of The Pawn Project through her dedication to mentorship, inclusion, and the belief that chess is more than just a game — it is a tool for connection, growth, and confidence. Her leadership helps create spaces where players feel supported, challenged, and inspired to keep learning.
