Signs

Information is vital and when presented well everyone knows where things are but Johnstown has a few improvements to make.

Present Signs Better

The local area doesn't have that many signs but each could be improved especially where the Council have been using weedkiller.

Estate Entry Markers and all the 'Welcome' signs could have a planting to add colour and provide a Bee Friendly environment whilst being low maintenance and long term.

Learn to Love 'Weeds'.

Scars on the grass will soon start to show where weedkiller is being used by the Council. The JTT is going to request they stop because often it's not really necessary and leaves a burn mark on the chemically scorched earth.

Last July we explored the overuse of weed killer especially after the 2017 ban came into force from using glyphosate or RoundUp. Ireland, along with some other EU countries, has deferred the ban to 2022 from pressure from the farming community.

Council's across Ireland should set the example especially when Bee Friendly plants are being sprayed and the weeds will return.

Fix Signs

The lettering has been vandalized to direction signs on both sides of the bridge on approach into Johnstown. It's been left like this for quite some time. The signs on the south side are very dangerous to pedestrians where they encroach into the pavement edge on.

The JTT has asked for this to be repaired and adjusted.

Letters Missing and a Danger to pedestrians

Missing Signs

Where is the Johnstown School Campus?

There are no road side signage for either St Stephens NS or Colaiste na Mi Secondary School. The JTT are requesting for this oversight to be corrected.

Where is the Riverside Walk ?

We need signs to tell people where the Athlumney Riverside Walk is but at the same time ensure there is safe access.

Wrong Signs

The L5050 road which runs behind the school between the Kentstown Road and Johnstown Village there are signs which refer to school access but this hasn't been the case for many years. The signage is therefore redundant UNLESS the Council do plan to reopen the back gates of the school.

Either the signs should go or the the road become school access.

Single Use Plastic Signs

A great success during this year's Elections where Johnstown declared itself a Single Use Plastic Poster Free Zone.

Can we ensure we maintain this every election and save the environment from needless plastic waste.

Information Signs

Both the Riverside Walk and any of the new planting areas will need information or direction signs.

The JTT have made contact with a local Men's Shed who they're hoping will help create some of the information signs particularly for the planting areas.
