Why did Convertkit launch the free plan?

ConvertKit is tailor-made for creators to grow their audiences. Our mission is to help creators earn a living and we believe that by adding a free entry-point we are removing a large roadblock for beginner creators towards earning a living online. Read more on why we launched a free plan here.

Who is the free plan designed for?

The free plan is for beginner creators, preferably creators who don’t even have a website yet. We were consistently getting a 12%/monthly churn on our $29/month up to 1000 subscribers paid plan. The biggest reason why creators were canceling was because they weren’t ready to pay for email yet. We launched the free plan to close the gap so beginner creators could start and grow within ConvertKit.

What’s the difference between the free plan and the paid plan?

The free plan allows creators to make unlimited landing pages and forms. They can choose from multiple templates, add personalization and design, include an incentive email, create a thank you page, manage subscribers and send broadcast emails.

Sequences, visual automations, and RSS feed management are not included in the free plan.

To gain access to these features, they must upgrade to a paid plan.

When someone first signs up for the free plan, they will have immediate access to landing pages and opt-in forms to start building their community. In order to unlock the ability to manage subscribers and send broadcast emails, they must first refer a friend to the free plan. But, because you are an affiliate, you have the ability to gift any new free plan customer that signs up through your link with 100 subscribers to manage and send broadcasts to immediately.

The free plan originally included up to 100 email subscribers to manage. How long will this increase to 1000 subscribers be in effect?

This change will be in effect forever! The new subscriber limit is 1000 and we plan to keep it that way.

I hear new free plan customers gain access to Creator Pass when they create an account with ConvertKit. What is Creator Pass?

Will existing free plan users have access to Creator Pass?

Creator Pass will also be added to all existing free plan accounts!

What if someone who is already on the free plan wants access to the 1000 subscribers and they currently have X # of subscribers?

We will give them the difference to equal 1000 if they are below 1000 subscribers. Just have them email help@convertkit.com and our team will help.

What if someone who is on the $29 plan downgrades to the free plan because of this new promotion?

We will move them from a paid plan to the free-limited plan which will allow them to send to 1000 subscribers for free. If they are below 1000 subscribers we will offer them up to 1000 and if they exceed 1000 subscribers we will refer them to Refer a Friend or paid plans.

What if someone refers a friend, how many subscribers will they sign-up with?

The friend that was referred will get 1000 subscribers, the friend that sent the referral will only get 100 subscribers.

When are free plan users prompted to upgrade to a free plan?

Inside the app, free plan users will still see sequences and visual automations on the menu bar, but they will be greyed out. When they click on these features they will come to a paywall that prompts them to upgrade to the paid plan in order to use the features. They will also hit a paywall if they exceed their subscriber limit without referring more free users (1 referral = 100 subscribers).

Can I still promote a trial instead of the free plan?

Yes, you absolutely can. On a trial, they will have access to the entire ConvertKit tool. If they begin paying, you will receive a commission as normal. If they decide they aren’t ready for the paid plan, they can downgrade to a free plan until they are ready.

How can free plan users get access to the Convertkit Community?

Once they create a free Convertkit account, they can click on the question mark located at the top right hand corner on their account. Click community, and they’ll be redirected to the Convertkit community page where they can create their profile, join groups, follow topics, post a question/comment on their timeline, and interact with other creators. Once they create their profile, the community feature can then be found in the drop down menu on their Convertkit gravatar.

How does the internal referral program work?

Those on the free plan have the option to refer their friends to create a free Convertkit account. Each friend they refer that creates their own free Convertkit account will unlock 100 subscribers in both the referrer and the referee’s account. This means that the subscriber feature and the broadcast feature will be accessible. The more friends they refer to create a free Convertkit account, the more subscribers they can unlock inside of their own account (limit:1,000 subscribers).

The referral program and the affiliate program are not connected in any way. If a free user refers a friend to also use ConvertKit’s free plan, then that referral upgrades to a paid plan, the referring customer will not receive a commission. The only way to receive a commission from a referral is to be part of the affiliate program.

We launched the internal referral program to improve our K factor (virality/shareability) within the ConvertKit app. So far it’s resulted in about 15% of our monthly free plans coming from the internal referral program.

How can they access the refer a friend feature?

To send referral emails, they’ll head to the drop down menu on their Convertkit gravatar and click referrals. They’ll then be redirected to where they can refer their friends, see who they referred so far, and see who has accepted their invitation to create a free Convertkit account.

On a free plan, how can someone import subscribers and where would they be able to see them?

Once a customer unlocks the subscriber feature (by referring their friends, or by signing up with your affiliate link that automatically unlocks 100 subscribers for them to manage) they can then import their subscribers into their account. Head to the subscribers tab, click on the “Add subscribers” large pink button located on the right, and then choose how you would like to import.

Note: They will not be able to send emails if their subscriber count is greater than their managed subscribers. They would need to either upgrade to a paid plan or refer more friends (who create a free Convertkit account) to get to the number of subscribers they want to send to (limit: 1,000 subscribers).
