The documentary Walking with Dinosaurs did an incredible job of creating an immersive world with dinosaurs. However, The Dinodyssey can take it one step further: this time, you can really walk with dinosaurs. The Dinodyssey lets players explore at their own pace, resulting in a unique and uncharted concept.
Since the summer of 2021, The Dinodyssey has been worked on by one or two people. The game is being built in Unreal Engine 5, which just released an early access version. Setting up the project and getting used to the new tools took some time, but at this point, the prehistoric valley is home to beetles, birds, butterflies, lizards, a sleepy tyrannosaur, and an active family of Stegoceras. All animals are accompanied by a documentary-style narrative and "further reading" can be done internally in the game's bestiary, making the game as educative as it is fun.
The dinosaurs feel like real animals, as the design, movement, and behavior are all based on real-life references: Stegoceras' routine is heavily influenced by chicken behavior. It might seem like an odd decision, but given Stegoceras' (bird-like) hip structure and the lack of living relatives, the spice of chicken really is the secret ingredient to the game's sense of realism.
During the summer of 2022, The Dinodyssey has leveled up! Luca and Misha visited Naturalis (the biggest natural history museum of the Netherlands!), where they met Matthijs and Anne. Matthijs is Naturalis' senior projectleader exhibitions and Anne is the Dutch dinosaur specialist, so it was an amazing opportunity to meet them and discuss about The Dinodyssey. The meeting has been the base of a very valuable relationship and it really has opened some doors for The Dinodyssey, so who knows what the next level will bring!
