Fairfax - week of April 5th

We hope all students had a great spring break! On that note, FCPS have announced that they will offer four days in-person learning by late April. Moving to vaccine news, the Fairfax Health District is now offering vaccinations for all phase 1b personnel and some phase 1c essential workers. These worker groups include energy, water, wastewater, waste removal, housing and construction, food service, transportation, logistics, and higher education faculty and staff. To add, by April 18th, all Fairfax adults will be eligible for a vaccine if the county has enough supply. The county is also moving its vaccine partnerships forward. One such is Giant. They are now offering vaccine appointments at pharmacy locations such as the one in Springfield. Regarding stats, Fairfax County had a 951 case increase from last week making the new total: 73,175. The weekly case increases seem like they're going down again which is good. Deaths unfortunately went up by 6 causing the total count to be 1,072. Finally, with hospitalizations, we are up now at 3,820. This is 63 more than last week.

Fairfax - Week of March 29th

Due to a significant travel rate increase, counties that have already gone through spring break have had a surge in cases. Since our spring break just began, there has not been a noticeable increase in our cases, but make sure to follow COVID-19 guidelines regardless. In other news, 16 year old's can get the Pfizer vaccine, so make sure to try and sign up for one to make our community the safest it can be. Fairfax county is currently at 72,224 cases which is about a 2000 increase from last week, with 113 cases just today. Deaths are at 1,066 which is only 1 more than last week and lastly there have been a total of 3,757 hospitalized. Have a wonderful Spring break!

Fairfax - week of March 22nd

Although during quarantine a lot of people have been well off, not everyone has had equal opportunities to get food. Luckily, we have company's like 'Great Harvest Bread'. Their original goal was to donate 5,000 loaves of bread when quarantine first hit, but they have surpassed that goal by a jaw-dropping 15,000! They have donated to 40-50 different shelters and are still hitting more. Moving on to vaccine news, Northern VA leaders including Fairfax and Loudoun are asking for more vaccines due to them being able to not only ramp up vaccinations, but do it equitably as well. For Fairfax specifically, they are expanding vaccine registration to Food and Agriculture, Manufacturing, and Grocery Store Workers. The county is also hiring around 250 more vaccinators. With some more solemn news, 119 new cases were found just today making the new total 70,860. Deaths are now at 1,065 which is 6 more than last week(Numbers are finally slowing down!). Finally, hospitalizations are now at 3,707 which is 54 more than last week.

Fairfax - week of March 15th

Schools are now officially going strong with in-school learning. So far there have been no outbreaks within FCPS schools, and from what we've heard from students, not only are the schools taking COVID-19 seriously, kids are also still able to somewhat socialize. This brings back a sense of "normalcy" that students have been looking forward for a long time. In other news, seven Fairfax High students created murals on construction fencing to "brighten up" the county a little more during this critical time. Moving on to vaccine news, we just passed 1,000,000 vaccines administered! In the county of Fairfax alone, we have administered 312,706 doses, which is one of the highest out of the VA counties. With some more solemn news, 798 new cases were found this week making the new total 69,628. Deaths are now at 1,057 which is 21 more than last week. Finally, hospitalizations are now at 3,653 which is 36 more than last week.

Fairfax - week of March 8th

In terms of school, Fairfax is going back to “in school” hybrid learning this week and all teachers are required to go back to school. Any Fairfax students that are partaking in hybrid learning should be checking their emails. On vaccines, MyDr.'s Pharmacy will now work directly to administer vaccines in Fairfax. In other news, though they closed when cases started spiking, Fairfax County Libraries will reopen indoor express services for 30 min per person starting March 22nd. In case news, Fairfax has a total of 68,680 cases which is a 1,133 case increase. The weekly case average is declining with the current levels around the week of Nov. 8. On the other hand, 67 new deaths were reported which makes the new total 1,036. Along with this, there are 3,617 hospitalizations, 53 more than last week.

Fairfax - week of March 1st

The Fairfax Health Department is now working with the Giant Pharmacy to administer vaccines for COVID-19. To add, as we said in the Loudoun update, the new Johnson and Johnson vaccine will begin shipping to Virginia next week which includes Fairfax. Organizations and the Fairfax government are also working to make transportation easier to vaccination sites. The county has introduced a subsidized taxi voucher program. In case news, cases are at 67,547, this is a 1,410 increase compared to last week's total. Hospitalizations are up by 42 with a new total of 3,564. In contrast, deaths saw a massive uptick of 90 which results in the total deceased being 969.

Fairfax - week of February 22nd

Fairfax also announced that they are hiring more nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, and Licensed Practical Nurses to aid in their vaccination/general pandemic efforts. If this is interesting to you or you want to help the community, then make sure to apply because Fairfax needs your help! Finally, last week, Fairfax announced they were not joining the newly launched vaccine preregistration state system. This seems to have caused significant confusion in Fairfax. There were 542 people calling from Fairfax to the state call center the day after the program launched, luckily the call center rerouted the callers to their Fairfax counterpart. Remember everyone, Fairfax isn't part of the state-vaccine registration program! In case news, 1,381 cases were found today making the new total 66,137. This is a 1,000 smaller increase compared to last week's. With that, hospitalizations went up by 48, which is also around half the increase of last week. The new hospitalization total is 3,522. On the other hand, unfortunately, deaths went up by 31 which is 10 more than the increase from last week. The new death count is 879.

Fairfax - week of February 15th

In vaccine news from the week, Fairfax was able to launch a vaccine dashboard with a lot of relative info like the number of people vaccinated and your current position on the vaccine waitlist. The Fairfax Health District also announced that they will opt-out of the Virginia COVID-19 vaccine pre registration system, making Fairfax the only county to not be a part of it. In other news, the "fall" sports season is going to begin next Monday which includes Fairfax County Public Schools. We hope all the athletes have a safe and fun season! Finally, a new FCPS calendar option was introduced to be voted on for the next school year. This option takes away the new holidays designated for events such as Diwali for four extra days of school to make up for the learning deficit from COVID. Along with that, hospitalizations went up by 85 making the new total 3,474. The new death count is 848, a 22 man increase from last week

Fairfax - week of February 8th

CVS will soon offer eligible Fairfax County residents with a COVID-19 vaccine on an appointment basis starting next week thanks to the federal partnership we mentioned in a previous Loudoun update. This program will roll out to the rest of the state in the next week as well. FCPS also updated its plans for in-person learning. The School Board decided unanimously that ALL STUDENTS will move to twice a week hybrid learning starting in mid-March. Families that still want to go fully virtual can opt-out of hybrid. At the same time, some teachers will remain teaching from their homes. To compensate FCPS is planning to hire 845 classroom monitors. On the vaccine side, 185,000 people are waiting for vaccinations. Health officials are trying to speed up the process and better communicate like their current plan to make a vaccination dashboard. In case news, Cases are now at 62,502, this is a 2,066 case increase from last week. Overall, the daily case increase is dropping to June levels. Along with that, hospitalizations increased by 72 with the new total being 3,389. Deaths have also increased, specifically by 24 making the new total 826.

Fairfax - week of February 1st

Vaccination has resumed for educators, school staff, and some child care providers. Along with that, in-person schooling is expected to start on Feb 16 with the Superintendent updating the school board on the issue tomorrow. Finally, FCPS will resume school tomorrow even with all the snow so remember to attend class! In case news, Cases have surpassed 60,000 with the exact total being 60,436. The new hospitalization total is 3,317. The death count has unfortunately passed 800 with the new total 802.

Fairfax - week of January 18th

A new COVID-19 variant was found in a Northern Virginia hospital. There has also been a vaccine shortage in Fairfax which may increase the time that it takes some teachers to get vaccinated. There are still 22,000 teachers who need to get vaccinated. In case news, there are currently 57,164 total cases in Fairfax, an increase by 7,324. There have also been 45 new deaths since last week, taking the total to 752. There have been 127 new hospitalizations since last week, taking the total to 3,209.

Fairfax - week of january 11th

In other COVID news, Fairfax is now ready to move on to phase 1B of the vaccine plan, where they vaccinate high risk and medical front line workers. Moreover, after Jan 16th, Fairfax County School employees will become eligible for the vaccine. In case news, Fairfax now has 49,840 cases, an increase of 3,245 since last week. There have been 53 new deaths since last week, taking the total to 707. There have also been 292 new hospitalizations since last week, taking the total to 3,072.

Fairfax - week of January 4th

In vaccine news, the Virginia Department of Health allocated $500,000 for the county's vaccine distribution. Also, long term care facilities in Fairfax are included in the CVS program for receiving the vaccine. Finally, the community and the government are ramping up their support for the poor. Due to the increase in homelessness, Fairfax is opening hypothermia shelters so people who are homeless can have a place to stay during the winter. On the other hand, Non-profits like Food for Others is working with the community and stores like Wegmans to provide food to the poor. In case news, Fairfax has hit 46,595 cases which is 3,809 from last week. Fairfax's hospitalizations have also risen by 89 since last week to 2,780. Regarding deaths, there have been 10 new deaths, putting the total at 654.

Fairfax - week of december 28th

Firefighters and medics have started to get vaccinated. Fairfax also recently awarded grants with a total worth of $52.5 million to 4,800 small businesses and non-profits. Funds are helping to fund wages, rent, employee's health insurance, and other operating costs for these groups. In case news, Fairfax is now at 42,786 cases. This is an increase by 3,809. Hospitalizations also went up drastically by exactly 153 making the new total 3,032. Deaths went up by 32 which makes the new death total 703.

Fairfax County Water is offering people affected by COVID 19 different payment options. The Pfizer vaccine has also been introduced into Fairfax county hospitals and the Moderna vaccine (which was recently approved by the FDA) will also be coming soon. In case news, Fairfax currently sits at 40,121 cases. An increase by 3,064 since last week. Fairfax's hospitalizations have also risen by 89 since last week to 2,780. There have been 10 new deaths since last week, putting the total at 654.

Fairfax has stopped their hybrid learning, and has returned all students to distance learning. In case news, Fairfax now has 37,057 cases, an increase by 3,385 since last week. There are also 15 new deaths since last week, taking the total to 644. There have also been 58 new hospitalizations since last week, making the total 2,691.

Fairfax - week of december 7th

Fairfax is having safety teams look at their schools and school busses to maintain safety and make sure that they are safe. In case news, Fairfax has 2,690 new cases since yesterday, taking the total to 33,762. There has also been 3 new deaths since yesterday, making the total 626. There have been 104 new hospitalizations since yesterday, making the total 2,633.

Fairfax - week of november 30th

Fairfax county has cancelled their plans to bring certain students back to school. We can expect Fairfax to hold another vote on bringing students back later on in the year. In case news, Fairfax now has 31,072 cases, an increase by 1,893 since last week. The deaths have also increased by 6 since last week, taking the total to 623. Hospitalizations have increased to 2,529 since last week, an increase by 47.

Fairfax - week of november 23rd

With virtual learning (online school) in Fairfax county, failing grades (F's and D's) have increased vastly. The amount of these failing grades might change however as students start to come back to school. In case news, since last week, the total number of cases in Fairfax has increased by 2,250 cases, to 29,179. The number of deaths have also increased to 617, an increase by 6 deaths since last week. The total number of hospitalizations (currently) stands at 2,482 at the end of this week.

Fairfax county has decided to push back their start date for in-person learning. This is partly due to a large spike in COVID cases. Protestors gathered at the site of a press conference by FCPS where teachers could talk about their concerns with in person learning. The protestors were advocating for in person learning to resume. It is hard to tell when actual in person learning will restart, but it could be as late as March. In case news, the case count in Fairfax county has increased since last week by approximately 1,300 cases, to 26,929. The total deaths in Fairfax have also increased to 611, an increase by 5 since last week.

Fairfax - week of november 9th

Teachers in Fairfax county are once again expressing concern over the return to schools, this time through different videos on Twitter. With historic voter turnout taking place across the country, Fairfax is no different, reporting the highest voter turnout that they have ever had for this past election. In case news, positive cases in Fairfax county have increased by nearly 1,200, to 25,593. Unfortunately, the deaths have also increased by 2 to 607. Hospitalizations are now at 2,354.

Fairfax county is preparing for possible riots due to the upcoming presidential election. Many stores have boarded up their windows and doors due to fears of looting from these possible riots. In case news, positive cases in Fairfax county have increased a vast amount (over 1,000) to 24,399. The deaths in Fairfax county have remained constant at 605.

Fairfax-week of october 25th

Fairfax county has released a new plan to bring students back to school by January 26th. Fairfax early voting has reached the largest total it ever has at 264,600. Remember to keep voting! In case news, the number of cases in Fairfax county have unfortunately increased by over 1,000 cases since last week to 23,351. Moreover, the deaths in Fairfax county have risen by 4 to 606.

Fairfax-week of october 18th

A few kids from Fairfax county have just started to go back to schools. A school board meeting commenced a few days ago on the topic of reopening schools. The proposed plan by Fairfax superintendent was to reinstate kindergarten through second grade, followed by 3rd to 6th grade, and finally 7th to 12th grade in February. The vote, however, ended in a 6-6 tie, and no decision was made. In case news, Fairfax county cases have actually reportedly decreased a near 40 cases from last week to 22,687. The deaths in Fairfax county however have risen to 602.

Fairfax-week of october 11th

Fairfax county has expanded the number of early voting sites so that more people can vote and to decrease the length of lines. Hackers have unfortunately published stolen information that they have taken from a cyber attack against Fairfax County schools. And finally, Fairfax teachers are demanding answers from the school board about reopening procedures, as they feel that the Fairfax school board has not been transparent. In case news, there has been over a 1,000 case increase in Fairfax since last week, pushing the number to 22,725. There have also been 5 new deaths due to COVID since the last week.

Fairfax-week of october 4th

Fairfax County's teachers union has protested Fairfax's reopening plan, urging for a later date. For some good news, Fairfax has hosted a virtual job fair for those who have been affected by the pandemic in losing their jobs. These people now opportunity to get back on their feet. In case news, COVID cases in Fairfax have risen by around 400 cases, to 21,632 since last week. Sadly, 5 deaths have also been added since last week, making the death count 595.

Fairfax-week of september 27th

The time for teachers to decide whether they want to return to classrooms for in person teaching or not has been extended to 4:30 PM on Tuesday. If a teacher chooses to not return, Fairfax county is allowing them a one year unpaid leave of absence. By the end of October, around 7,000 students and 650 teachers will be back in classrooms (3.5 percent of the district). The phased reopening plan includes desks that are 6 feet apart, classes staying in one group throughout the day, random temperature checks, lunch in the classroom, etc. In other news, Fairfax’s “Region 2 Transportation” delivers independent reading books to kids all around the county using different busses. Finally, voting in Fairfax county has opened, so remember to go and vote if you can! In case news, Fairfax county has not reported any new deaths since yesterday, keeping the count at 590. However, the case counts for October 4th have increased to 21,182.

Fairfax-Week of September 14th

Fairfax has officially started online school. Unfortunately, there was a large-scale ransomware attack resulting in students experiencing problems with their computers. A reminder has been issued to students to still sign in for attendance on Mondays despite not having school. FCPS is also extending their Free Meal Program to December 31. In addition, they are starting to address ESL learners. In addition to school problems, a lot of small businesses are struggling too. Fortunately, they are adapting to the situation. For example, a summer camp, Adventure Links, is now offering a virtual summer camp which is helping kids stay occupied virtually! Finally, Virginia recently unveiled their COVIDWISE app which helps the government do contact tracing for COVID-19. In case news, cases have reached a total of 19,495 which is a sharp increase compared to last week. Deaths are only at 568, which is a low increase. Total hospitalizations are around 2,100.

Fairfax-Week of August 24th

Students in Fairfax who did not already have a school computer now has one. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to Wifi, meaning that some kids will not be able to learn at the same level. Also, there have been talks of a janitorial union, as they believe they are being paid unfairly. In case news, COVID cases in Fairfax are currently at 18,496 and the deaths are at 569. This means that the cases have increased by around 1000 people. In addition, this week there are now a total of 2,078 hospitalized.

Fairfax-Week of August 17th

All normal Wolf Trap performances have been canceled for the fall season. Luckily, they are able to stay afloat via donations. A large side effect of COVID is starting to come into the limelight: mental health. Because of the pandemic, kids and teens have been suffering from mental problems and can't access the help they need. Since virtual school may exacerbate the crisis, Fairfax schools have ensured that one or more counselors and school psychologists are present at all Fairfax schools. The county's superintendent has even stated, “The first day of school [will not be] about covering the syllabus, but connecting with every child [so] that we can have a positive start to the school year.” This emphasis on mental health is because depression decreases focus on school work or extracurriculars. In other news, bus drivers have been given an entirely new job: bringing food and school supplies for kids who need them. In case news, COVID cases have reached a total of 17,531 which is a massive increase. Deaths are only at 531 which is not as much of an boost from last week.

Fairfax-Week of August 10th

Starting on Aug. 29, the Fairfax buses will return to their normal schedule. Jeffrey Mckay has stated that when it opens, their passengers and employees will be their top priority. Another route, Route 697, is also being added new route. Unfortunately, this will disrupt normal route schedules, so if you are worried that your normal route has changed, go to the Fairfax Connector website. To address cleanliness concerns, the bus drivers are attempting to make it as safe as they possibly can, including cleaning, disinfecting, and social distancing. In case news, we currently have 16,995 cases of COVID and 533 deaths. Fortunately, the case rate is not going up as fast as we were last month. However, state leaders have voiced concerns that the untested COVID patients and asymptomatic will skew that ratee highly.

Fairfax-Week of August 3rd

We are officially in Phase 3 of the COVID reopening plan. This means that restaurants are open, but there is no seating allowed. Businesses for personal grooming, places of worship, and child care centers are allowed to open as long as there social distancing is in effect. Moreover, if a large gathering occurs and someone attending is found to have COVID, other people attending are not mandated to test themselves. This continues the trend of COVID spreading and creation of asymptomatic carriers. In case news, Fairfax has 16,302 cases and a total of 529 deaths. This shows a slight increase in virus speed. To address testing troubles, Virginia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, and Maryland are all working together to acquire “Rapid tests”, which are tests that can give results in about 30 minutes. In other news, FCPS schedules have come out. The virtual school day starts at 8:10 AM and will go to 2:55. The schedule is the same as last year, except now we will be having asynchronous Mondays.

Fairfax-Week of July 27th

Due to the call for racial justice, Robert E. Lee High School got renamed to John Lewis High school. The vote for it was unanimous. This indicates that Fairfax and other counties are starting to address the problems plaguing us for centuries. In other news, FCPS’s support staff are not getting the attention they need for next year. As a result, The Fairfax County Federation of Teachers is calling on FCPS to put more focus on these groups of people. These people want to go fully virtual so they can properly help next year. In case news, Fairfax confirmed cases are at 15,908 which is about 600 more than last week. Deaths are at 552, which means that unfortunately, the death rate is still rising at a significant rate. Also, over 90,000 people are missing power right now because of the recent wind storm in Fairfax. Power has not yet been restored. Lastly, Isaias (the tropical storm) is supposed to impact Fairfax very heavily. It's expected that we have winds around 90 miles per hour.

Fairfax-Week of July 20th

Schools are officially going to be fully from the beginning! This means that COVID-19 will spread less, meaning that cases will stagnate. Masks are also now being 3D printed for doctors and nurses due to their scarcity. In case news, Fairfax confirmed cases are at 15,304 and the deaths are at 515. Fortunately, the cases are not rising as quickly as they were two weeks ago, but people are still getting together in big groups which means it's bound to take a jump again. Luckily, Fairfax hasn't had protests on wearing masks. Hopefully it stays that way.

Fairfax-Week of July 13th

Due to recent social justice movement occurring across the nation, numerous confederate statues have been taken down. Loudoun is also partnering with Fairfax to help create a healthier community by creating multiple health improvement projects, including a glass recycling program. Finally, a drive-thru theater has opened up in Fairfax, providing residents with live performances. In case news, they have increased by 602, bringing us to a total of 15,005. This is a great improvement, considering last week it went up by 4,000. Deaths are now at 522, and 1,810 have been hospitalized.

Fairfax-Week of July 6th

Schools will open back up again, but you have a choice. You can go to school 2 out of 5 days of the week or you can do it fully online. The questions is, will it be safe to return to school at all? On case news, COVID-19 cases in Fairfax have jumped to 14,403, indicating a 4,000 case jump in the past week. Along with the cases, the amount of deaths have gone up also by 29%, a total of 494.

Fairfax-Week of July 4th

It's the Fourth of July! Even though this is a day to be celebrated, it is also a day to reflect knocking out the systemic racism that still affects us today. On case news, currently Fairfax has the most COVID-19 cases in Virginia, with a total of 10,906. The amount of deaths is 383.
