In Noctus, there's three gryphon clans to choose from: the SunKin, the RainKin, and the SkyKin. The first question that you'll be confronted with on the application sheet is "Which clan are you choosing?" Here, I'm going to reveal the inspirations behind each clan and what these might mean for making your OC(s).
SunKin gryphons are typically cunning, brave, and steadfast, and while they are not as well-equipped against threats, they know their way around them. SunKin gryphons are trained with defense in mind, more than the RainKin are - there are a lot of threats that you can't hide from in the desert, so many SunKin gryphons are more eager to flash their feathers at the first sign of danger. Thanks to their hobbies including "riding one of the quickest and rarest creatures in all of Noctus," they may also be known as reckless; truth be told, many of them are extremely intelligent and think ahead before making a move. The SunKin clan is the most likely clan you will be permitted to roleplay a sphinx.
The RainKin clan is a clan focused on family, nature, and protection. Many of the gryphons of the RainKin clan still feel the effects of the Conflict of Noctus and their hesitation to jump into combat reflects this. Despite this anxiety, most RainKin gryphons will put their life on the line if it means protecting their fellow clanmates. There is no hesitation to be felt against threats of the jungle in this clan. When making a RainKin character, keep in mind that older RainKin gryphons were taught to fight dirty by Rainstar for their protection, but this does not mean they are evil! RainKin gryphons are very dedicated to their clan, but will also protect and be hospitable towards other Kin, especially following the gruesome Conflict of Noctus.
Brave, headstrong, and skilled in combat, the SkyKin are a force to be reckoned with. However, as seen in the Conflict of Noctus, the SkyKin are uninterested in fighting the other clans for their territory thanks to having a huge division of land that is clearly defined by the mountain range. The SkyKin gryphons are the neutral grounds of the clans with most of their conflict being inside the territory's borders - competition is a big part of the SkyKin culture. Many SkyKin gryphons yearn to be the best they can be and they have an emphasis on family legacy. Thanks to many SkyKin gryphons also being larger than your average gryphon, warriors and hunters might be a bit more cocky in their ability and get caught off guard by the true dangers of Noctus.
The average appearance for each clan is detailed on their pages and what is suggested to be written for the appearance is put on the character sheet. However, you may be struggling to come up with a unique gryphon in the first place.
If you are struggling to find a bird, you can look at birds that are most often found in your clan's biome. We will be discouraging duplicates across the clans, such as multiple harpy eagle gryphons.
The button below will lead to a random Wikipedia bird-species-related page. Try it out a few times and see what you get! Please note that very, very rarely, pages feature taxidermized birds as their reference image if that makes you uncomfortable.
Almost every Warrior Cats name you can think of is permitted to be used in the server. Mythical creature names are also acceptable as prefixes and suffixes. If you have any other mythical creature/plant ideas in mind that don't exist in Noctus, feel free to bring those up either in an ask or on the sheet directly.
If you click the button below, you'll get a random name that can be used in Noctus. This is just for inspiration; a lot of them are probably just two random words mashed together. Additionally, note that the prefix or suffix of "moon" can be used by moonspeakers only, and the words "Sun," "Fen," "Rain," and "Sky" are forbidden in names.
There's a few ways to come up with an interesting personality and backstory in Noctus.
You can use one of the character concepts to link your character directly to the lore of Noctus. These are open for all to use, and while some may be limited, I encourage you to shoot for one if it interests you.
Think of your favorite character tropes or ones you haven't done yet. Apply for one of them.
Take your old Warrior Cats OCs and reformat them to fit Noctus. Reduce, reuse, and recycle!
If you and a friend are applying together, collaborate to make two gryphons that know each other - maybe they're siblings or a parent-and-child. Please note there's no guarantee that you're both accepted.
Taking from the above point, leave blanks in your backstory where you think someone else could fill the void! For example, say "Tawnypelt's best friend, (server character), was there for her..." and when you join the server, ask around to see if someone would like to substitute that with their OC. Plotting is fun.
Personally, I like to pull personalities and backstories from characters who inspire me and characters that I like. I would advise against pulling from widely-known characters, though there's nothing stopping you. I've always preferred to roleplay canon characters over OCs, which is why I'm making this an option. Heavy inspiration is acceptable, but not a direct copy-paste.
Direfrost is heavily inspired by Hiei from Yu Yu Hakusho (voice claim, his goal, personality, and appearance), but he still has some differences (his lack of skill, his protectiveness over cubs, his upbringing)
