Special Interest Groups

Current Special Interest Groups & Conveners

Getting involved in a Special Interest Group is a great way to network with people who are interested in the same areas of medical education. Many research projects, presentations, and friendships have been formed through SIG membership! Reach out to SIG conveners to find out when the next virtual meeting will be held and how you can get access.

Basic Science Education

Our BSE SIG mission is to engage with CGEA members and the broader health professional education community to foster a community of support and development for those engaged in basic science education. Our primary SIG forum is a bi-monthly online webinar series (Tuesdays at Noon Central) for discussion of current topics of relevance to basic science education in the health professions.  To date, we’ve held three robust sessions on the following topics of significance to our profession: (1) “Basic science medical education post-transition to pass/fail reporting for USMLE Step 1”; (2) “3rd party resources and the pursuit of efficiency in learning among medical students” with guest speaker Ariel Cascio; and (3) “Examining how the Reduction of the Basic Sciences in Medical Education Informs the Perpetuation of Health Disparities” with guest speaker Dr. Imanni Sheppard.

We welcome any new and interested members to our SIG and would love to hear your ideas for future session topics and speakers and other ideas related to potential research collaborations.  Reach out to the conveners to receive an invitation to our meetings!

Directors of Clinical Skills Courses (DOCS)

Directors of Clinical Skills Education (DOCS) a national consortium of educators and leaders who direct clinical skills education for medical students. Our scope ranges from preclerkship through clerkship phases, development of curriculum through assessment, history taking to physical exam, diagnostics through clinical reasoning and creation of patient plans.  We are a community of educators and leaders who aim to establish best practices, promote scholarship, and encourage the exchange of ideas across the continuum of clinical skills education and assessment.  We have a listserv and an annual meeting before the AAMC conference each year.  Additionally, we are divided into regional GEAs, have a mentoring program for faculty, and a number of Special Interest Groups within DOCS given our broad scope.  Visit directorsofclinicalskillscourses.com to find out more, join our list serv, and join our SIG. Reach out to the convener for more information!

Faculty Development

The goal of the Faculty Development SIG is to build and support a collaborative group of faculty developers. We aim to facilitate the discussion and collective effort of faculty development in the areas of mentoring, leadership, educator, career, wellness, or scholarship development. Intended audience: Anyone in the CGEA (or other GEAs without their own SIG) who are interested in or lead faculty development.  Reach out to the conveners to receive an invitation to our meetings!

I-DARE
(Inclusion, Diversity, Anti-Racism, and Equity)

Explore the education needs of schools in relation to inclusion, diversity, equity, and anti-racism topics. The I-DARE SIG would intersect with other SIGS as collaborative work in this space is needed to promote equitable development and inclusive practices. For example, the MESRE SIG would like to collaborate to explore ways to increase the diversity of applicants for the CGEA grant. In addition, a collaborative partnership with the Faculty Development SIG would be instrumental to promote inclusive education and teaching practices while also promoting self-care and resilience. Interprofessional Education

The Interprofessional Education (IPE) Sig is intended to bring together a diverse group of educators who are interested in collaborative practice among multiple professions, and exploring the best ways we can educate learners about successful teamwork. Anyone in CGEA is more than welcome to join us and meet new colleagues interested in IPE! Reach out to the conveners to receive an invitation to our meetings!
