On October 6, 2018, The CDN at KSU hosted Dr. Stephen W. Ponder, MD, FAAP, CDE, and over 170 people from as far away as Canada and Utah for a Sugar Surfing Workshop. Dr. Ponder is not only the 2018 Diabetes Educator of the Year, but he is also a Type 1 Diabetic himself. Dr. Ponder created "Sugar Surfing", an "in the moment" form of management for Type 1 Diabetes based on identification of patterns using a continuous glucose monitor or frequent use of a glucometer. Sugar Surfing does not require an insulin pump or pod, and it can be effective for individuals at any age.
Each year, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and the JDRF partner to hold a one day event of panel discussions and sessions for parents and high schoolers to discuss the transition from high school to college while living with Type 1 Diabetes. In 2019, The CDN at KSU were invited to speak on several panels about being members of the CDN and what membership offers, as well as what it is like to navigate college with Type 1 Diabetes. The CDN at KSU was honored to speak at this event and hopes to continue to be involved in the future!
Each year, Kennesaw State University enrolls about 6,000 first-time freshmen. These freshmen participate in IGNITION, a new student orientation designed to assist students in becoming familiar with the campus, meeting advisers, registering for courses, and interacting with other first-time freshmen. New students also have the chance to attend a Registered Student Organization Fair in order to become more involved in extracurricular and on-campus activities from their very first semester. Summer 2019 was the first time that The CDN at KSU had the opportunity to participate, and it was an overwhelming success!
