October in Colorado is basically family-fun season with the volume turned ALL the way up. 🍂

One minute you're wandering through a pumpkin patch with cider in your hand, and the next you're trying to remember which trunk-or-treat starts at 4:00, whether the haunted attraction is appropriate for your 9-year-old, and why your teenager suddenly needs an entirely different costume three days before Halloween.

That's where The Buzzy B comes in. 🐝💗

🎃 1. Visit a Pumpkin Patch or Farm

This one practically has to happen at least once.

October is prime time for pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, farm animals, giant slides, pumpkin picking and all those wonderfully dusty fall activities that somehow result in finding hay in your car until February.

Make your family's mission more fun by trying something different this year. Find the weirdest pumpkin. Let each child choose a tiny pumpkin. Race through a corn maze. Take the annual pumpkin-measuring photo. Visit a farm you've never tried before.

🚗🍬 2. Hit a Trunk-or-Treat

If your kids believe Halloween candy should be treated as a competitive sport, October is their month.

We've found dozens of trunk-or-treats throughout our communities, and they aren't all on Halloween weekend.

Churches, schools, businesses, community organizations, first responders and local groups are hosting celebrations throughout October.

Some include much more than candy, too. Look for games, bounce houses, food trucks, costume contests, characters and other activities.

🐝 BUZZY TIP: Check the calendar before heading out. Some events require registration, have limited supplies or are intended for specific age groups.

☐ Wear the costume somewhere BEFORE Halloween
☐ Find a trunk with an amazing theme
☐ Attend a trunk-or-treat you've never tried
☐ Let the kids trade candy afterward

👻 3. Find a Halloween Event

Halloween fun goes WAY beyond trick-or-treating.

October brings costume parties, Boo Fests, carnivals, spooky walks, character events, Halloween crafts, community celebrations and more.

And one of my favorite things about keeping The Buzzy B calendar is discovering events families might never know existed otherwise.

Don't assume something isn't open to your family just because you haven't attended before. Check the event details. You may discover a brand-new tradition hiding practically in your backyard.

☐ Attend a costume event
☐ Find a daytime Halloween celebration
☐ Try a Halloween event before Halloween weekend
☐ Let the kids wear their costumes more than once because you paid for those things 😂

🍂 4. Spend a Day at a Fall Festival

Not everything in October needs ghosts and candy.

Fall festivals are perfect for families who want pumpkins, music, food, crafts, vendors, games and beautiful Colorado fall weather without necessarily going full Halloween.

And they can work especially well when your kids have a big age gap because everyone can wander, eat, explore and find something interesting.

☐ Listen to live music
☐ Shop from a local business
☐ Try a fall treat
☐ Play a ridiculous festival game
☐ Let each child choose one activity

😱 5. Find Haunted Fun for Bigger Kids

Here's one for the tweens and teens who have graduated from smiling cartoon ghosts and would now like something that makes Mom question every parenting decision that brought us here.

Older kids might enjoy haunted houses, spooky attractions, nighttime adventures, escape rooms or Halloween experiences designed for a slightly braver crowd.

Always check recommended ages and scare levels first. "Family-friendly" and "my particular child will sleep again before Christmas" are not necessarily the same thing.

☐ Try one spooky attraction
☐ Visit an escape room
☐ Do something after dark
☐ Let your teen choose the adventure

💰 6. Have a Completely FREE October Adventure

You do not need to spend a fortune to make October memorable.

Period.

Some of the best October activities are completely free, and I specifically hunt for free events when building The Buzzy B calendar.

Look for community celebrations, outdoor events, crafts, trick-or-treating events, festivals and other freebies.

Or make your own:

☐ Go on a leaf hunt
☐ Walk through a decorated neighborhood
☐ Pack a picnic
☐ Take a flashlight walk
☐ Visit a new park
☐ Have a Halloween movie night at home

💙 7. Find Sensory-Friendly Fun

October can be a lot.

Crowds. Costumes. Flashing lights. Loud music. Unexpected sounds. People jumping out at you. Sticky hands. Different routines.

For children who become overwhelmed by traditional Halloween environments, sensory-friendly and lower-sensory events can make a huge difference.

Look for smaller crowds, daylight events, quieter environments, reduced lighting or sound, flexible participation and activities where costumes aren't required.

And remember: your family's version of Halloween does not have to look like anyone else's.

☐ Find one comfortable event
☐ Bring headphones or comfort items if helpful
☐ Have an exit plan
☐ Skip anything that isn't enjoyable

Fun isn't supposed to be something your child has to endure. 💗

🎮 8. Let the Teenagers Choose

Repeat after me:

Family fun does not end when your kids stop wanting to pet goats.

Although, frankly, I am an adult and will happily pet the goat.

Tweens and teens may just need a different definition of family fun.

Think escape rooms, arcades, haunted attractions, live entertainment, interesting restaurants, evening events, photo-worthy destinations, shopping, gaming and experiences they can help choose.

Try handing your teen the calendar and saying:

"Pick something."

Then resist the urge to steer them toward what you think they should choose.

☐ Teen chooses the outing
☐ Try something new together
☐ Take one picture without demanding 47 retakes
☐ Feed them afterward because apparently teenagers require continuous refueling

🚙 9. Take One Worth-the-Drive Adventure

Sometimes the best family adventure requires leaving your usual orbit.

Pick one October day and go somewhere you wouldn't normally go.

Explore another Colorado community. Find a giant fall festival. Visit a different pumpkin patch. Chase fall colors. Try an attraction you've been saying you'll visit "someday."

Someday has an opening this October. 🍂

This might be my favorite challenge.

Some will be huge events. Others might be tiny community gems.

And sometimes it'll simply be something I've found that deserves more attention.
