Small cardboard box, tissue box, or empty cereal box
Construction paper or scrapbook paper
Washable markers, crayons, or paint
Glue stick or tape
Child-safe scissors
Stickers, paper hearts, ribbons, or other decorations
Small pieces of paper for kindness notes
Step 1: Build your mailbox
Choose a small box. Have an adult cut a narrow slot in the top or front so little notes can slide inside. Leave an opening or flap for retrieving the messages.
Step 2: Make it beautiful
Wrap the box in colorful paper or decorate it with washable paint and markers. Let the kids choose their favorite colors!
Step 3: Add some personality
Decorate with hearts, stickers, drawings, or a little sign that says “Kindness Mail.” Add a paper flag if you're feeling extra crafty.
Step 4: Write your kindness notes
Encourage everyone to write or draw something thoughtful for another family member. Younger children can draw pictures or dictate messages to a grown-up.
Step 5: You've got kindness mail!
Place the mailboxes somewhere everyone can reach. Deliver sweet messages throughout the week, then choose a special time to open and read them together.
Try these sweet little messages:
“You make me smile!”
“Thank you for helping me.”
“I love playing with you.”
“You're really good at making people laugh.”
“My favorite thing about you is…”
“I'm happy you're in my family.”
“You made my day better!”
Turn your craft into a family tradition! Each day, challenge everyone to deliver one kind note. You can even surprise grandparents, teachers, neighbors, or friends with a little kindness mail.
For a classroom or homeschool group, make one mailbox for each child and encourage everyone to write an encouraging message for someone else.
Buzzy's little reminder: The mailbox doesn't have to be perfect. The sweetest messages usually come with crooked letters, backwards hearts, and enough glitter to haunt your kitchen until February.
