This is described as a "spicy, spherical, baked food that was brown in color with small black bits mixed in." (from the Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia via Wookipedia)
These appeared on-screen in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and as you can see from the picture, they really look like hush puppies. Now, it claims that they're baked, but the crust on that looks deep fried to me as most baked breads have a nice golden-brown and more smooth crust, not to mention that every time I've tried baking dough balls, they tend to melt into free-form loaves.
Alternatively, it could be baked, having been rolled in a seed mixture and left in some form of mold throughout the baking process.
An interesting update:
I came across a blast from the past in a thrift store the other day: a set of cake pop pans/forms, and gave me the idea to roll small dough balls maybe half as small as the pans and cook them in the forms so when they expand, they press against the sides giving them that really unique compact sphere shape. If all else fails, it'll be an interesting snack for the local birds and squirrels to fight over.
Also, you may have seen my update on The Landing Pad, I'm now a diabetic, and I have to choose my carbs a little more carefully now. White bread is almost definitely a no-no for me now, and coincidentally, I love wheat bread, which also coincidentally, are almost exactly what these look like to me, complete with that sweet, sweet whole grain texture.
