Blue Milk

(Screen Accurate)

(You've been warned)

Tatooine is semi-famous for Blue Milk, which itself has developed a life outside of the Star Wars universe as a weird looking but delicious beverage. In-universe, it's Bantha milk, plain and simple. Just like you'd milk a cow or a goat here on Earth for their milk. Except that this milk is blue.

In our universe, however, specifically for the filming of one short little scene in far off Tunisia, they had to make due with what we have here, and in the hot, arid deserts where they filmed all the Tatooine scenes, plain old milk didn't have much of a shelf life.

Enter in UHT (Ultra High Temperature) milk, otherwise known as shelf-stable milk. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you can be thankful you've never had to drink the stuff. It's not known for being particularly palatable. In fact, it's known for being fairly disgusting. Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker) was interviewed back in 2018 by the Radio Times and had this to say:

". . . they put blue food colouring in it – and it was really ghastly. Oily and sweet and euch! Triggered your gag reflex. But I said, 'Look – if they gave me blue milk, you bet I’m going to drink it on camera, because what other chance am I going to get?' So there’s an indication that I’m an underrated actor – I gulped it and acted like I liked it without vomiting."

If you really feel like torturing yourself, here's how ya make it.

Whatcha Need:

  • UHT Milk

  • Blue Food Grade Dye

How Ya Do It:

  1. Probably the hardest part is actually finding UHT milk. I've found the best place to get it is your local dollar store. You really don't want to spend much money on this stuff.

  1. Once you've managed to procure the milk, mix in a few drops of your dye. That's it. Bottoms up.
