We have been asking teachers, school leaders, work based learning providers and higher education institutions how they are currently using learner profiles to support their practice and the teaching and learning experience that children and young people receive.
This is what they have told us so far...
FOR LEARNING
As a tool for dialogue between students and their teacher or pastoral support lead, often as part of coaching conversations - to enable pupils/students to reflect on their learning and set goals
To help students present their work and their achievements to others - for example through showcase or celebration events
To build metacognition and self understanding and self efficacy through the process of reflecting on learning
To report student progress and outcomes to parents - for example through student led conferences, instead of the more traditional parents evening
To capture and showcase extracurricular or co-curricular learning
To capture and provide evidence of broader skills and competencies and learning dispositions that students have
To connect learning that happens in school to learning outside of school
To support learners with special educational needs to showcase their strengths and communicate their learning in a multimedia format
FOR TRANSITIONS
To support transitions between different phases of education, where students take their profile with them
This includes supporting careers information advice and guidance, and signposting potential destinations
To create a digital multimedia CV for employers
To gather, collate and curate evidence for UCAS applications
For schools to gathering richer broader information on students - understanding and knowing them and who they are - for when them move between education settings
Around the world digital transcripts and portable learning records are being used for a variety of purposes, including:
For College and University admissions
To give credit to out of school learning/summer learning programs - particularly in countries where this can count towards formal qualifications
To develop new types of credentials for different forms of learning (eg mastery based) - for progression to College and employment
To enable a portable learning record into adult learning/across borders - particularly for refugee populations
For accrediting professional development and professional learning in the workplace
