The Future Leaders Fellowship consists of 10 full-tuition scholarships for outstanding full-time master’s students and entry-level occupational therapy doctoral students. The goal of the fellowships is to enhance the recruitment of students to Tufts who will contribute collectively to a greater diversity of perspectives and experiences within GSAS programs. Beyond the full scholarships, these students’ admission letters will name them as a Future Leader Fellow and they will be featured on the GSAS website. Also, as part of the financial aid package, GSAS will provide the Fellows' with the Graduate 25 Anytime Meals plan for each year they are enrolled at GSAS.
These Fellowships will be funded 50% from the department budget and 50% from GSAS funding. Given the small number of fellowships we will award in 2022-2023, we don’t anticipate that all GSAS programs will have FLFs, and no program will have more than one or at most two fellows.
In addition to meeting all admissions criteria set by your program, consideration must be given to the applicant’s capacity to contribute to the GSAS, their FLF cohort, and their academic program. That is, consider the student’s potential to leverage their expertise, academic skills, and cultural capital to enhance their program and the compositional excellence of their program and GSAS.
Confirm Budget: For each Fellowship awarded, your program will contribute 50% from your merit scholarship budget. Only submit nominations that if awarded are still within budget. GSAS will then match this amount with an additional 50% from a special and separate GSAS Dean’s Office fund.
Submit Nominations: Each DGS is invited to nominate up to 3 of its strongest candidates. To nominate a candidate from your program complete the Fellowship Nomination Form* (nominations should be submitted when the applicant is admitted). You will be asked to provide the rank (how the candidate ranks (1-3) within your department's nomination pool) and a statement of nomination summarizing the case based on the selection criteria detailed above.
A small administrative committee, headed by the GSAS Dean, will review the applicants’ records and departmental nomination materials. Nominations will be reviewed on a rolling basis so that offers to nominees can be made quickly. We will bear in mind that programs have different deadlines and timelines as we allocate the fellowships.
Award decisions will be communicated to the student directly through Slate. The DGS will also be notified. If a candidate turns down our offer of admission and therefore the awarded Fellowship, we will look to offer the Fellowship to another qualified candidate. This alternate candidate will come from the pool of all remaining nominations across all departments.
Q: There are multiple graduate programs within our department, can each program nominate up to 3 students?
Yes, each program can nominate up to 3 applicants but there is no guarantee that every program will receive a FLF.
Q: Can I still nominate an applicant even if I have already sent in the department's decision to admit the student?
A: Yes, you are able to still nominate an applicant that has already been admitted. If the applicant is selected to receive a FLF, the Dean's Office will work with OGA to update the applicants record and Slate and an official revised Financial Aid Offer Letter will be released to the student.
Q: Does the applicant need to be a US Citizen?
There are no citizenship requirement, any full-time masters student is able to be nominated.
Q: Can internal applicants (part-time employees) being admitted into our program be nominated?
The FLF appointment is intended as a recruitment tool, to try to recruit students who may otherwise be very challenging for us to bring to Tufts. For this reason, a current employee would not be eligible for a FLF.
Q: What information do the FLF receipients receive once they are selected?
The following is included in the Financial Aid Award Letter for recipients:
"In recognition of your outstanding academic achievements and leadership potential, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) is pleased to award you the GSAS Future Leaders Fellowship (FLF). Recipients of the GSAS FLF receive a full tuition scholarship and will be highlighted on our awardee webpage. Also, as part of your financial aid package, GSAS will provide you with the Graduate 25 Anytime Meals plan for each year you are enrolled at GSAS. Use at your leisure– Tufts Dining Graduate 25 Anytime Meals never expire."
