When you walk into the room we worked in, you will probably be impressed by how productive we look. Everywhere you see a lot of Post-Its. We used them for understanding the problem, brainstorming for ideas, distribute tasks and defining the game.
We did kind of an ice-breaking game the first day where we talked to one person and asked each other questions.
We watch the film More about Everything to learn about the land-use problems and to get some ideas.
To not just talk about forests, we went out on a excursion to experience a natural forest by ourself. In addition to a long hike and eating blueberries directly out of the forest, we had a look at clearcuts and cultured forests on our way to the nature reserve.
Our first ideas were based on the well-known werewolf game (find who is who) and the pandemic game (all against the game).
After the pitch we decided to go with the werewolf-idea (more easy in the allotted time) and developping our own game out of this approach like a role game.
Out of working on the projects and facing problems we developed a game that is hardly related to Werewolf. We made our own game out of it.
With this new gameplay, we faced new problems. Our task for the day was to find out which problems the gameplay has and to solve these.
One of the problem was the numbers/ressouces we came up with. So Paul and Bege made a list for us to see which forest generate which income, biodiversity and emissions. These needed to be scaled for the gameplay.
In order to identify more difficulties but also to define goals, we played many internal rounds and wrote down our problems for each game.
We probably don't have the game finished as we imagined in the beginning but it's a working and playable game we can be proud of.
On Thursday (first week) we started to work with a scrum board to have a structure of the project. For that we wrote down tasks that came to our minds in the beginning and added more and more tasks during the course of the project.
Each task was assigned to at least one person but in the main tasks we still had to work together to set for example the basic gameplay, goals and characters.
The game is not as finished as we imagined. The concept is sort of ready but there are a few things that still need to be done. The main tasks are more play-testing with other people as well as designing the game.
For the play-testing we need more people who haven't played the game so far. We would give them the rulebook that we are making in the project-week. Then we would have a look if you can understand the game by just reading the rules and without someone explaining. In addition to that we would have a look at the actual gameplay.
For the design part, various maps and other components still need to be implemented.
The cards include the character cards and the forest cards that have different values. The values should be displayed as bars with matching colours, so players can better imagine whether a number is high or low.
Apart from that, we had imagined unifying the now different counters and putting them in coin-form. This would make the game more compact and easier to take along.
Visual approach of the game
