Virtual reality: Exploring anxiety and fear.
CPD for qualified and student therapists:
Date available: From 16th May 2025.
This CPD uses VR to provide you with an opportunity to experience and experiment safely with anxiety:
You will have 90 minuites during which you can observe in yourself, how anxiety can alter or disrupt behaviour.
To experience the power erroneous beliefs have, to drown out reality.
To run experiments based on your current theories about intrusive thoughts, phobias and anxiety disorders.
The Aims of this CPD.
When people come to us because intrusive thoughts are affecting their lives, they know that the thoughts are only in their minds and yet this knowledge isn't enough to instantly free them from the compelling power the false beliefs have over them.
VR creates a fearful situation that isn't real...
The aim of experiencing and experimenting with anxiety may be to...
To enhance your empathy for people who are afflicted by erroneous beliefs, and false convictions.
To examine and reflect on your personal theories about anxiety.
To notice in yourself your reactions to the standard approaches therapists use with clients who suffer from anxiety disorders.
The experiment.
When you arrive for this CPD you will find that by simply placing a VR headset over your eyes, and putting on a set of headphones, your eyes and ears will do their best to convince you that you are elsewhere.
And while you are in the virtual world you will be presented with but one, very, very simple, and apparently very, very dangerous task to complete.
If it is easy for you to do this task?
What enables you to override the impressions from your senses?
Were you aware before hand of your ability to do this?
If you find it difficult?
What strategy did you use to enable you to complete the task?
How does that strategy agree or disagree with the theory you would offer to a client?
If you find it impossible to do...you are not alone!
