Welcome to The Dragoons Milsim (TDM)
We are a MilSim group that utilizes the ArmA 3 platform to showcase a realistic portrayal of the Canadian Armoured Cavalry. We believe in balancing realism, game mechanics and limitations, while ensuring that our events are still fun.
This MilSim group began in October 2022, but the founding members were part of previous units going back to 2017.
The purpose of this site is to gather for your consumption, any information related to how this organization operates. You will be able to see our structure, training doctrine and find out how to join.
What is this? We are a Milsim group in ArmA 3. We portray military simulation with a lean on semi-realism. Primarily we are a group designed to provide entertainment to our members. The experiences shared while in a Milsim group are always interesting.
When are your events? Our events are every Saturday from 4pm until 8pm EST. This timeslot works well for both NA and EU players typically. Members are expected to arrive on time, and stay throughout.
How can I join? Head to the Recruiting page on this site and fill out a short application!
When is training? Our training is done during main events. We take breaks between missions/operations/campaigns to ensure members needing the training to fulfill their role can catch up. Outside of main events, some training can be done on demand if instructor and student are available and able to coordinate. We therefore do not have any "optional training nights" unless requested and typically only at a crew or section level and never mandatory. That said, all training requirements are mandatory for their roles and must be completed to advance.
Why do you do X this way? While we try to get everything right, sometimes we have to substitute something because the ArmA platform may or may not allow certain things to work. Sometimes we make decisions to make events fun rather then doctrinal. Sometimes we just don't know exactly how something is supposed to be done, so we wing it.
I have a specific skillset I think will benefit the group. Can I help? Certainly. Join today and help us grow to be a premier Canadian Milsim group. We are always looking for people with experience in Zeusing, medical, leadership etc. If you think you have something we're lacking, then let us know when you apply!
Do you have an air detachment? Absolutely not. We strongly believe that adding an air detachment provides little benefit to the group. We don't need to be airlifted anywhere and doctrinally Canada doesn't use attack helicopters.
Are you mechanized infantry? Again, no. We utilize the LAV platform not as a troop carrier, but as an armoured fighting vehicle. Our LAV is effectively a mobile gun platform, and we perform our movements on the field as a troop. Most of our members spend their events mounted in a vehicle, working as a crew.
Do you offer Infantry-like Gunplay? Absolutely yes. Our Assault Troopers function like infantry in that they form sections, and fight on foot. They can fight from the back of a vehicle as well, or take on a "light role" utilizing soft-skin or open top vehicles. Moving between Assault Section and Vehicle Crew is always an option, so if you seek variety you can volunteer to do both roles!
Do you have have other roles then cavalry? Yes we do! RCD employs other trades from the Communications and Electronics, Royal Mechanical and Engineering, Medical and Logistical Branches. Currently we are looking for Medics and other support trades. If you'd like to offer a a unique role, ask!
Can I directly join into a Zeus role? The short answer here is no. However there is no restriction on joining the group, experiencing our events as a member and later applying to Zeus Supporter roles. The reason we do not allow direct entry is because this is a critically trusted role, and we want any potential Zeus Supporter to know how we operate before taking it on.
Okay but for real I was in the Dragoons and you're doing this wrong. Alright bud. Some of us have served with the Dragoons in the past, so some of our information may be outdated or incorrect now. If you have comments feel free to add positive criticism. If you feel like your experience is relevant, then add it to the conversation. But as stated above: sometimes decisions are made to allow us to work in the platform of choice, and to ensure fun is still provided. Additionally, the Armoured Corps in Canada's Army is currently transitioning into armoured cavalry for AFVs over the historical armoured recce that many of us were familiar with.
I've seen B Squadron deployments listed. What is B Squadron? B Squadron is our joint operation element. Whenever there are optional joint operation events with another unit on a different event time, we ask members to "volunteer" to join B Sqn for those events. This way we can separate our main events under A Sqn, and our optional events under B Sqn. Historically this unit used to be known as B Squadron as seen in group history, so this is a little bit of a nod to that history.
April 2017 - started as 3RCR, light infantry that was sometimes mechanized;
August 2017 - conducted Joint Operation with 1RRF, starting in Afghanistan;
November 2017 - conducted Afghanistan campaign as a unit, branching away from region that 1RRF was originally working in;
March 2018 - closed down 3RCR after some staff members had to retire for external reasons;
April 2018 - Some members joined 1RRF to help develop understanding of how units operate;
July 2018 - 1RRF splintered, and 2 R ANG was formed. Former 3RCR members joined new group and helped them get started;
November 2018 - B Sqn RCD was formed when another large group looking for old 3RCR staff contacted us about a merger. We conducted one "joint operation" and they folded as a unit. B Sqn then continued to operate with many of the former 3RCR staff;
December 2018 - official start of operations, B Sqn deployed to island in the Mediterranean as part of NATO exercise that ended up turning into operation when local rebels attempted to overthrow host nation;
June 2019 - after a disagreement over how to run the unit, one staff member took their modpack and left. The remainder of members decided to close down the unit until further notice. Planning for the future began, and we decided to look for a WW2 themed unit;
July 2019 - members of the former B Sqn decided to join the Red Devils, a WW2 themed unit of British Paratroopers. While we were members of RD, we took on a myriad of roles from Platoon Signaller, Anti-tank gunners, Medical orderlies, Bren gunners, Section Commanders, Platoon Sergeants, Platoon Commanders, Company 2IC and Recce Troop Commander. Many of us joined the Staff of RD and helped grow the unit to its peak strength. Over the next three years despite the setbacks of the global pandemic we remained a strong, tight-knit community of friends;
May 2022 - after a period of strong resentment with the unit's new leadership, many of us decided it was time to move on. At the completion of our final campaign we gave notice and moved on from the Red Devils. Over the three years of our journey we learned a lot about Milsim and ourselves. We made a lot of new friends in RD that have remained loyal and stayed with us. At this point we were very keen to stay together as a group, so we made the decision to rejoin 2 R ANG and help them along;
October 2022 - although happy to continue operations with 2 R ANG (and some of our members still do) we decided to start planning for this unit. Drawing on the experiences of the last 5-6 years, we designed and built TDM;
January 2023 - official start of TDM operations with a core group of sixteen players boasting a combined 75+ years of Milsim experience.
March 2023 - start of Operation SOPRANO, a UN supported mission in South Sudan.
June 2023 - end of Op SOPRANO and start of micro WW2 campaign.
August 2023 - start of Op KOBOLD (Northern Kosovo) + Op ARMITAGE II (Joint Operation with 2 R ANG in the Republic of Altis.)
Sepember 2023 - Op ARMITAGE II Joint Operation with 2 R ANG wraps up after eight weeks. At least 19 members of TDM participated during this event.
October 2023 - Op KOBOLD continues, with 7 CMBG joining us for 2 weeks. With members of 7 CMBG we reach a peak 40 participants for a campaign mission.
December 2023 - Op KOBOLD has wrapped up and TDM goes into winter break. Our first annual Winter PvP is conducted with a friendly RU vs CA match up.
January 2024 - Training in the new year begins. Operation MELTON begins for B Squadron in Northern Afghanistan as part of joint campaign with 2 R ANG Battlegroup.
February 2024 - A Sqn wraps up work-up training in Malden, then deploys to Tembelan on Operation AUXILIUM as part of Australian-led multinational brigade.
March 2024 - Operation MELTON with 2 R ANG ends successfully. A Sqn continues to fight on Tembelan against Chinese PMC invasion on Operation AUXILIUM.
May 2024 - Operation AUXILUM concludes with the withdraw of allied forces from the country.
June 2024 - Post-campaign side ops includes Fallout themed events followed by Boer War mini-Campaign.
July 2024 - TDM ceases to exist as an active unit. The decision to fold and merge into 7 CMBG is made. Around half the membership elect to stay onboard and form the new RCTR subunit in 7 CMBG, while the remainder either retired or return to Red Devils.
May 2026 - TDM opens once again, after core group splinters from 7 CMBG. While we enjoyed our time being under a big circus, it had too many clowns.
