DT Technician Checklist
A structured, reliable routine for a smooth-running D&T department
Daily Tasks
· Check all workshops, studios and prep rooms for safety hazards (trip risks, spills, obstructions).
· Power up and inspect machinery for obvious faults (bandsaw, pillar drill, sander, laser cutter, 3D printers).
· Empty extraction bins if approaching capacity; check airflow and filters.
· Refill consumables: glue sticks, hot glue, craft knives, blades, sandpaper, solder, batteries, card, acrylic, timber offcuts.
· Prepare materials and equipment for the day's lessons (cut stock, set out tools, prep jigs, load files).
· Check laser cutter bed alignment and lens cleanliness.
· Start 3D prints needed for the day; remove completed prints.
· Tidy and reset practical spaces after each lesson.
· Check hand tools for damage (chisels, saws, files, screwdrivers).
· Ensure PPE is available and clean (goggles, aprons, gloves).
· Log any faults or low-stock items.
· Support teachers with lesson setup or demonstrations as needed.
Weekly Tasks
· Conduct deeper machine checks (belt tension, blade condition, lubrication points).
· Test emergency stops and safety guards on all machinery.
· Replace or sharpen tools (chisels, plane blades, craft knives).
· Restock materials from central storage, update inventory levels.
· Clean extraction systems more thoroughly (filters, hoses).
· Check chemical and finishing materials (varnish, spray paint, adhesives) for safe storage and expiry.
· Review 3D printer maintenance (nozzle clean, bed levelling, filament condition).
· Organise offcuts and recycle unusable waste.
· Update COSHH records if new materials have been used.
· Review upcoming schemes of learning to anticipate material needs.
· Check first-aid kits in workshops.
· Back up digital files for laser cutter, CNC, and 3D printers.
Termly Tasks
· Full service of all machinery (bandsaw, scroll saw, pillar drill, sanders, laser cutter).
· PAT testing coordination (if not done by external contractor).
· Deep clean of workshops, storage rooms, and prep areas.
· Audit all tools and equipment; replace missing or damaged items.
· Full stocktake of materials (timber, plastics, electronics, textiles, food tech supplies if applicable).
· Review and update risk assessments and COSHH documentation.
· Reorganise storage systems for efficiency.
· Check and update technician handbook or department procedures.
· Review budget usage and plan orders for next term.
· Inspect and refresh classroom displays, safety signage, and student exemplars.
· Evaluate what worked well this term and what needs improving (equipment, workflow, lesson support).
