WHY DESIGNING AND REAL MAKING IS BETTER THAN JUST DESIGNING AND MAKING A CARD MODEL.
1. You learn more by actually manufacturing.
A card model is often only a rough representation. When you make the real thing, you discover; what materials behave like, what tools you need, what problems appear during manufacturing and how strong, stable or functional your design really is.
A card model cannot show you any of that.
2. You can test and improve your design, making a real prototype lets you. Test strength, movement, fit and usability. Spot weaknesses or mistakes. Make improvements based on real results
A card model is too simple to test properly.
3. It develops real practical skills. Designing and making builds hands on skills such as measuring accurately, cutting and joining materials, using tools safely and an understanding real‑world constraints.
A card model does not challenge you in the same way.
4. It gives a more realistic final product. A simple card model is only a visual idea.
A made prototype is closer to the final product, more detailed, functional and easier to evaluate. It shows what your design would actually be like in real life.
A card model is not a real product.
5. It is more creative and satisfying when you build something you have designed. It feels more rewarding, allowing you to express creativity through materials and techniques. ‘Making’ gives you a sense of achievement you do not get from a card model.
A card model will eventually end up in the bin.
