THE NEW NUCLEAR OPTION AND THE WARS OF THE FUTURE

The Wars of the Future

The Cyber frontier has proven itself to be the next frontline of warfare between countries. There are is a constant barrage of cyber attacks happening throughout the world (1). Countries need to start protecting themselves and more importantly their infrastructure in case of enemy forces or a lone black hat hacker deciding to test their security.

Relation to Terminator

In the third installment of the Terminator series, we can see what the cause of their so called "Judgment Day" and the faults made by humanity to prevent their attempted annihilation. Judgment Day consists of an artificial intelligence called Sky Net being given access to all computer systems, even dangerous ones such as nuclear silos in order to fight a anonymous internet virus. Worst comes to worst and Skynet attempts to destroy humanity through the use of their own weapons. This is of course a fictional scenario but does it show some real world parallels?

Cyber Warfare

The Department of Defense has listed Cyber as their number one threat in previous years (2). They have been battling computer virus and all sort of threats for years now, many taking years to be completely eradicated such as Agent.BTZ. So far the United States has not had any major outfacing damages caused by Cyber Warfare but these must be prevented at all costs. Countries like Iran have seen what kind of damage a specialized attack can do. Many people misinterpret the dangers of cyber attacks as only targeting things as weapons systems and personal data. One of the most dangerous attacks available currently is attacking the less secure infrastructure of a country. Just as the US destroyed centrifuges in Iran what if a hostile power decided to overload power grids throughout the US or cause a Nuclear Meltdown. Ralph Langner warns of the dangers of a generic version of Struxnet which could target many different systems at once. (3) This could cause widespread outages and damage a countries ability to react to enemy attacks while also having to protect it's own population as people become more dependent on machines.
