I have come to the conclusion that students are mostly acting as consumers. The majority of apps are having students practice skills by answering questions created by someone else. The only apps or websites that allow students to create that I analyzed are google slides and docs. This is only used for students to create presentations or documents. This is disappointing because there are so many apps out there that are much more interactive and beneficial to students' learning. I think it is imperative that we as teachers try to include more apps that pose the students as the creators not the consumers.
Creators:
create content that others can interact with including music, text, audio, video, image data.
develop an app that provides a service
create forms online that others can fill in.
Consumers:
interact with content that has been generated by someone else including text, audio, video, music, image data.
user of an app that provides a service.
provide responses to forms online that someone created.
In order to situate my students as creators rather than consumers in my classroom it will be a goal to use technology to create their own experiences, videos, simulations and more. There are many apps out there that allow students to create real world examples of things they have learned. Creators collaborate, ask questions, and learn about their world while being a part of it. In my classroom students will be CREATORS!
In this slide deck, you will find two examples of students being creators through mathematics. Students use two different programs to explain different math topics. In the first example they use iPads to take pictures of familiar places and then edit the images in order to identify shapes in their world. The second activity asks students to use measurement and google earth to quantify their world.
