Use the following ice-breakers for your students to get to know each other better as well as to help you get to know your students.
Have students complete six of the activities included in this hyperlinked Google Doc. These activities include using Book Creator, Flipgrid, PicLit, and many more.
Have students roll dice to land on and select conversation starters.
Have students (or teachers) introduce themselves by creating a digital name tag on a shared Google Slides presentation.
Use these anticipatory set ideas to hook your students' attention and get them engaged in your lesson.
This list of mysterious hooks (or ways to catch your students' attention) are fun and can be used all year round. I especially like the mystery package delivery and mystery envelope ideas.
We take Brain Breaks in class to get students re-energized and reengaged in instruction by having them do sometimes silly, sometimes high energy, 1-2 minute activities that allow them to get out of their seat, get their blood pumping, and to use both sides of their brain by crossing their midline.
These are low-intensity brain breaks that focus on crossing the midline of the body.
This can be combined as a part of a mini-workout unit or used as a Brain Break for our more physical students.
Some of the most effective exercises can be done without equipment and simply use your own body weight. While regular squats are great, squat jumps offer a new take on the traditional--one that you're definitely going to feel in your quads. Learn how to do them below!
Coach's Tip: Make sure to use your whole foot to jump--not just your toes--and try not to let your shoulders lean out beyond your knees as this can strain and injure your back.
Coach's Tip: To maintain proper form, pretend that ice water is being poured down your spine keeping it straight throughout the exercise.
Stand on your toes to work out your calf muscles. Two ways you can do this are as follows:
This is a modified jumping jack, but instead of merely moving your arms and legs out from the center of your body, you are going into a squat during every other motion.
