Google Classroom is a free web service developed by Google for schools that aims to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way.
Google Classroom streamlines assignments and seamlessly integrates with other Google tools. With Classroom, you can manage assignments and communicate with students.
Why might you want to use Google Classroom?
Student submissions are automatically organized in Google Drive. This means that if you hand out Google Docs / Sheets / Slides to your students, there is a built-in management system with Classroom.
From the Google Classroom home screen (classroom.google.com) create a new class using the plus button and then give it a name (required) and section / subject (optional).
When you enter your class you will first come to the "Stream" page.
In the top header here you can select a new theme image or upload your own.
Click the "About" text to get class info and class code. In this pop-up you can click on the marquee box to display just the class code for your students.
You can also go to the "People" page to invite students (it pulls names and emails from the directory).
Once you set up your class make sure to go in to check your permission settings!!

You have three options for permissions for the "Stream":
To modify your notifications, go to the upper left corner and click the three lined bar. Then click into "Settings".
The "Stream" page is the main page and landing page of each Google Classroom class. All assignments and announcements are displayed there.
From the "Stream" page, the plus button will allow you to post Announcements and Reuse Posts.
When posting an Announcement you can attach documents, links, and YouTube videos. Depending on your permissions setting, students can also have the ability to comment on posts.

When you schedule a post, or save a draft, they will show up at the top in a "Saved announcements" section that will appear.
The "Classwork" page is where you will post all your questions and assignments. Once posted, they will show up here and on the "Stream" page.
Topics are like units in a class, you can assign topics to assignments and posts. This helps categorize and organize your content for you and your student.
As the teacher, you can quickly make assignments that include attached materials and hand out Google Docs to your students.
You can choose to assign Assignments to "All Students" or target specific students.
Add a Title, Instructions (optional), attach documents, links, and YouTube videos.

Make sure you choose the appropriate sharing setting when you are attaching your Google Doc to hand-out. For each student to have their own copy of the doc, make sure to choose the option "Make a copy for each student."
You can always go back in to edit questions and assignments and add or change the topic.
Get to Student Work
To get to student work you can either click on the assignments via "Classwork" and "View Assignment" or in the stream you can click on the assignment link.
This will take you to the "Student Work" page for this assignment. You have many options / actions you can take on this page.

Returning Work to Students
When returning work to students you have a few options as well.
You can return work to multiple students a provide a "Private comment" to them. This would be the same comment to all the students that are getting their work returned.
You can return the assignment individually to students and provide a "Private comment".
You can also export your grades to Google Sheets, or download them as a CSV.
Where are these files stored?
Google Classroom will create a "Classroom" folder in your Drive for each class and within that folder, a folder for each assignment.
The folder icon on the "Student Work" page will take you to that folder of student work in your Google Drive.
With questions you can switch between short answer and multiple choice. When polling you can enable or disable the "Students can see class summary" option. For the short answer option you can turn on and off if you want "Students can reply to each other" and "Students can edit answer".
Questions can either be "Short answer" or "Multiple choice".

Many applications have integration with Google Classroom. These applications connect to Google Classroom through a “share button.” This connection allows you to use some of your favorite websites and applications seamlessly with your Google Classroom assignments and announcements.
