We organize acrocamp because we love acro, but also because we love strong healthy communities built on respect. We rely on an amazing community of teachers, volunteers and acro-humans to make camp happen.
Camp has more than tripled in size since we started 10+ years ago (!!!) and so we think that is was worth talking about the values on which it is built.
Respect is a core value of our camp... that is why in addition to your standard liability waiver we ask you to recognize the ways in which your actions can contribute to making an inclusive community.
The intentions below have been defined to create an inclusive environment for AcroCamp NorthEast. Disrespect of campers, teachers or assistants will not be tolerated.
AcroCamp NorthEast is about building community. It is intended to be a space where we learn from and support each other. This means that we hold each other accountable and accept that we all have room to grow as acrobats, acroyogis and human beings.
We don’t live in an inclusive world, and unless we work to create one in the acro community it won’t exist there either.
We are excited to be partering with BACCES this year!
"The BIPOC Acro Collective Care Ecosystem (aka BACCES) is a collective that is passionate about radical inclusion. As part of our mission, we work with event organizers to improve accountability and inclusion practices so that acro spaces feel more welcome to BIPOC acrobats."
To the best of my ability, I will treat everyone at AcroCamp NorthEast—regardless of their race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, disability, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, size, experience/ability—with respect, and without judgment or bias.
I will not assume that everyone identifies with the female/male binary or uses she/her he/his pronouns.
I won’t assume people’s acrobatic role based on their size.
I will do my best to identify, acknowledge, and communicate my needs with reference to basing, flying, spotting and anything else that might come up.
I will not assume that consent exists and actively seek it in acro and in relations with other campers.
Hey... you... yes you... What would you add to this list? Let us know, this is a work in progress.
*We didn't develop these intentions in a void. I would like to recognize Danya Xena at the Superhero Circus Academy for allowing us to build on the intentions that she had created for her teaching spaces. THANK-YOU.
