Social emotional learning (SEL)
Refers to the process of acquiring and applying the skills, attitudes, and knowledge necessary to manage emotions, build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. SEL is important because it helps individuals, particularly children and adolescents, develop important life skills that contribute to their academic, personal, and social success. Research has shown that individuals with strong social emotional skills are better able to manage stress and anxiety, have more positive relationships, and are more likely to achieve academic and career success. Additionally, SEL can help reduce negative outcomes, such as aggression and substance abuse, and promote positive behaviors, such as empathy and self-awareness.
