Using Zoom for teaching

Zoom is my choice of platform for teaching online because it is so user-friendly and has all the tools you need for teaching and learning online . To read a review of Zoom click here. If you prefer to watch a youtube tutorial showing you the main features you can use for teaching, watch the video below.

It is likely that your students will join your zoom session using their mobile phone. The video below explains how they can join your zoom session

The following video explains how you can invite students to join your online class .

Getting your audio settings right

One of the most common problems when using zoom is not checking your audio settings. Background noise is also another problem which is easily fixed by asking everyone to use a noise cancelling mic and to go to a quiet room. As an online teacher you'll need to learn how to mute/unmute students or ask them to do it themselves (personally I prefer to remove their ability to mute/unmute their sound as it can get chaotic and confusing)

The settings for teaching group of of students (not one to one), can be a bit complicated. Luckily I have simplified it for your in the tutorial below :)

Most of my students own a mobile device which they use to attend my online classes. I've created a PDF user manual which I share with my learners. It contains 5 basic tools which they need to use in Zoom in order to learn effectively. The user manual saves time with troubleshooting if they read it BEFORE class.

Breakout rooms are a feature of Zoom which allows students to engage in group discussions in virtual rooms. The teacher can then enter each room to monitor their progress before they present their ideas in the main group. This tutorial explains how to set it up

Sharing google docs in breakout rooms

If you are teaching group classes, you might need to use google docs in breakout rooms. Unfortunately, Zoom makes this almost impossible since a google doc which displays in the main room, doesn't actually display in the breakout room. Luckily this tutorial helps give teachers a feasible workaround!
