Teaching reading

When teaching reading, remember these tips

1) Use large fonts and spread your text on several slides

Why?

Your students might be reading fonts on their mobile phone screens so text will appear smaller

2) Focus on teaching reading strategies and vocabulary in class, not just reading.

Why?

It is a better use of class time. They can do reading at home after your class.

3) Use images & short discussion questions to introduce the reading.

Why?

It grabs their attention and generates interest in the topic. The same principle applies to a face to face class!

4) Turn off your webcam and give students enough time to read. Walk away and grab a drink while they are reading.

Why?

They might feel more stressed if the teacher is watching them . Grabbing a drink also gives the teacher time to take a breather!

5) Have an online dictionary open on another browse tab. You can send the web link to their chatbox if they need to look up new words.

6) Email the worksheets to students before class.

Why?

They can look up unknown words before class which can build their confidence. It also frees up more time so that they can talk about the text during class. Some students like to scribble notes on a physical worksheet as they would in a face to face class.
