In 2013, my group of students headed to Thailand. Our experience began on a three day barge trip up the Chao Phraya River out of Bangkok, learning about Thai culture and sustianability. Students had an opportunity to learn about environmental issues faced by locals and take part in alms giving and purchase local food for dinner at an outdoor market. The group then visited Ayutthaya, an ancient capital city of former Siam, and stayed at the Prem International school in the city of Chiang Mai. Their immersion into Thai culture included cooking lessons, language lessons, a theatre workshop, a traditional Khantoke dinner, and a visit to the Asian Elephant Foundation. For the service component of the trip, the group assisted with renovations in a local village.
