In 2018, I accompanied a group of grade nines to Panama. The focus of the project included volunteering at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, volunteering with the indigenous communities of the Kuna Yala and Embera territories, and learning about the Panama Canal and its economic and environmental impacts on the country.
The students also participated in many activities to gain a greater understanding of Panama’s diverse people and environment, including hiking El India Dormida mountain, playing soccer with locals, visiting a rainforest discovery center, viewing ships in the Panama Canal, and exploring the old city of Panama City. The highlight of the trip for many students was interacting with local students in the town of Las Margaritas.
