The Second Spanish Republic and the Civil War radically changed the lives of millions of people in Spain. The Republic was a time of political changes, social tension and division, revolutionary government projects, violence, conflicts and radicalization of the country which led to the burst of a war like it had never been seen in Spain before and which left a mark that is still visible today.

In the middle of these events was involved my great-uncle Miquel Torroella Ferrer, who was a soldier in the army of the Republic. His death in an unknown place and circumstances on 2 April 1938 and the subsequent Francoist dictatorship left him practically forgotten, and the only things that were left from him were a photography and several letters he wrote from the front.

The objective of this project has been, using the letters as a basis, to reconstruct Miquel’s biography emphasizing the war years and specifying, with as much precision as possible, the place of his death to recover his memory and pay homage to him.

La Segona República Espanyola i la Guerra Civil van canviar radicalment la vida de milions de persones a Espanya. La República va ser una època de canvis polítics, tensió i divisió social, projectes governamentals revolucionaris, violència, conflictes i radicalització del país que va portar a l’esclat d’una guerra com mai s’havia vist a Espanya i que va deixar una marca que encara avui és visible.

Enmig d’aquests fets s’hi va veure involucrat el meu oncle-avi Miquel Torroella Ferrer, que va ser soldat de l’exèrcit de la República. La seva mort en un lloc i circumstàncies desconegudes el 2 d’abril de 1938 i la posterior dictadura franquista van deixar-lo pràcticament oblidat, i les úniques coses que van quedar d’ell van ser una fotografia i diverses cartes que va escriure des del front.

L’objectiu d’aquest treball ha estat, utilitzant les cartes com a base, reconstruir la biografia d’en Miquel fent èmfasi en els anys de la guerra i concretar, amb la màxima precisió possible, el lloc de la seva mort per recuperar la seva memòria i fer-li un homenatge.
