Paragraph Structure

Paragraphs as arguments

The structure of a paragraph follows the structure of an argument. The claim at the beginning of the paragraph is the argument itself. This is then proven and justified with evidence and analysis.

It has to be noted that the forces that binds these sections of the paragraph/argument together are  logic (clear and rational connections) and cohesion (unity and focus). If all the sentences in the paragraph don’t link together, you’ve haven’t proven your argument.

Logic & Cohesion

In order to ensure that the arguments in your paragraphs are as strong as they can be, you need to make sure that they meet the criteria of being logical and coherent. Use these slides to make sure that you aren't falling short of this criteria.
