Paper 1 is a platform that allows you to demonstrate some of the key skills developed in your English classroom, including:
The ability to interpret and analyze non-literary texts
The ability to evaluate the effectiveness of authorial choices in achieving a desired purpose
The ability to clearly, coherently and logically present your ideas in writing
Paper 1 is an analysis of unseen non-literary texts. Two different text types will be presented on the paper. SL students will have 75 minutes to analyse one of these texts, and their work will be worth 20 marks, accounting for 35% of their final grade. HL students, however, will have 135 minutes to analyse both texts, which will account for 40 marks, but still only 35% of their grade.
Step 1: Make sure that you understand the question.
What is the focus of the question? What's the Level 3? For example, is it purpose, target audience, or something else?
Step 2: Make sure that you understand the text. Take a moment to consider P.A.S.T: Purpose, Audience, Subject, Text Type & Title.
Step 3: Use the gridded planning structre to organise your arguments and make sure that your essay is focused and organised.
Reflecting on your performance allows you to identify strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring continuous growth. By understanding what worked and what didn't, you can make informed decisions for future practice. Use this reflection document to help you reflect on any Paper 1 practices that you attempt.
