Judith Wright

Notes On The Author

Judith Wright was a famous Queensland poet who lived in Brisbane and later on Mount Tamborine with her husband, philosopher Jack McKinney. She gained fame in the 1950s and 60s for her poetry, which was inspired by her love for the Australian landscape. Wright was also a passionate conservationist and an advocate for Aboriginal land rights. She helped form the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and fought to conserve the Great Barrier Reef and against sand mining on Fraser Island. Wright moved to Braidwood in New South Wales in 1975 and helped form the Aboriginal Treaty Committee. She continued to fight for the environment and Aboriginal land rights until her death in June 2000 at the age of 85. Wright is known as the conscience of the nation for her tireless work, and her poetry has had a significant impact on Australia's perception of itself.
