To make sure that our response to the guided question aligns with the intentions and focus of the prescribed text, we need to take a moment to understand the key aspects of the text. You can use the mnemonic PAST to help with this:
P - Purpose
A - Audience
S - Subject
T - Text Type & Title

The guiding question asks students to show how the author's opinion is expressed through tone. Below, there are five sets of activities that focus on five different tones in the text.
