ASME XXIV National Conference Young Composers Project invites students to submit a composition. A selected composer from each state will travel to the 2023 Conference in Sydney, NSW to participate in composition workshops with Australian composer Holly Harrison and Ensemble Offspring, attend conference sessions and composition performances.
Recent past Tasmanian composers who have been selected for this project include Finn Clarke in 2019 and Aron Nash and Guy Robertson in 2021.
The students who are selected are required to be available to attend the Young Composer’s Project in Sydney from Monday July 3, through to Wednesday July 5 2023.
Selected students should be either in the last 2 years of high school or the first 2 years of an undergraduate course. A student who is younger may apply, however, if a student is under 18 at the time of the conference, they must have an accompanying adult with them at their own expense.
Students are to compose a piece for flute, clarinet, cello and piano to be performed by Australia’s foremost new music group, Ensemble Offspring. The composition should be 4-6 minutes in length and embrace the conference theme Music Unleashed.
To unleash their creativity, students have been encouraged by Holly and Ensemble Offspring to consider the subtle inclusion of easily sourced, miscellaneous hand-held percussion instruments or unique found sounds to compliment the instrumental part. This element is not mandatory.
To support composer who might be interested in participating in this event, TASME will be holding three composition workshops in 2023. The Club will be designed to support any student wishing to further their composition skills, but in particular those wanting to participate in and prepare material for the Young Composers Project. More information about the workshops may be found here.
