A life long Caper, Paul was born in Sydney, N.S. but grew up in Margaree Forks, Cape Breton. He graduated from Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1972 with a Diploma in Physical Education, and in 1975 finished his Degree from St. F.X. University in Antigonish.
Spending most of his teaching career at Port Hood Consolidated School in Inverness County, he also taught at the Rev. H.J. MacDonald and Tracadie Consolidated in Antigonish Co. before moving to Bayview Education Centre 1999-2000.

While teaching he was involved with TAPHE for twenty years serving as regional representative for Cape Breton, Vice-President and President from 1992-1996. As President he represented TAPHE at several national Conferences.

Retirement allowed Paul to focus his attention on his love of hockey. He became Vice-President of the Cape Breton West Islanders of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League, the league that has the best fifteen, sixteen and seventeen year old hockey players in Nova Scotia, and allowed Paul the privilege of meeting and working with a host of upstanding and outstanding young men. Paul lives with his wife of 43 years, Eloise, and the ruler of their household "Sam the cat" in Port Hood. And there he is happy to remain — except for a brief annual excursion to the Gulf Coast of Florida when the snow flies on Cape Breton.
