When the terminally ill Queen of Corona is healed by consuming the flower, its magic transfers to the infant Princess Rapunzel. Gothel sneaks into the castle to steal a lock of the baby's hair, but discovering that cutting the strands turns them brown and powerless, she abducts the princess instead. • The Sun Drop connection: The animated series, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, reveals that the flower was actually the physical embodiment of the Sun Drop, a cosmic entity of pure light. Gothel spent centuries studying its magic before the royal guards uprooted it.

• The Daughter Twist: The series introduces Cassandra, a young woman who is revealed to be Gothel’s biological daughter. Gothel abandoned Cassandra as a young child on the night she kidnapped Rapunzel, proving that her maternal instincts were entirely fake and that she only cared about achieving immortality.

Folklore Origins

In the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale, the character is known as Dame Gothel. Rather than a vanity-obsessed woman seeking eternal youth, she is a powerful, vengeful sorceress or witch. She demands Rapunzel as payment from a desperate father who gets caught stealing rampion greens (rapunzel lettuce) from her enchanted garden. She raises Rapunzel strictly but locks her away in a doorless tower once the girl turns 12 to hide her from the rest of the world.
