Orphanage Roots & The Alias

In the original 2010 film Tangled, Flynn Rider reveals that his true name is Eugene Fitzherbert. Raised a penniless orphan at Miss Clare's Home for Boys in Corona, he spent his nights reading "The Tales of Flynnigan Rider" to the younger children. Inspired by this fictional, wealthy swashbuckler who traveled the world without a care, Eugene resolved to escape his dreary reality. He adopted his childhood hero's name as an alias, turned to a life of crime alongside his best friend Lance Strongbow (Arnwaldo Schnitz), and quickly built a reputation as one of the most infamous, quick-witted thieves in Corona. 

The Secret Royal Bloodline

While the original movie implies he is just an ordinary orphan, the animated sequel series Rapunzel's Tangled Adventureestablishes a major twist regarding his ancestry. Eugene is actually Prince Horace, the long-lost prince of the Dark Kingdom. During his infancy, his homeland was corrupted and nearly destroyed by a volatile, ancient cosmic artifact known as the Moonstone. To protect his son from the destruction that claimed the Queen's life, his father, King Edmund, ordered a complete evacuation of the realm. A trusted handmaiden smuggled the baby prince safely into Corona and left him at the orphanage with a letter and a stack of adventure books, intentionally concealing his royal identity to keep him hidden. 

Production Inspiration

Behind the scenes, Disney directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard created Flynn to serve as a strong, comedic counterweight to Rapunzel. Heavily inspired by classic Hollywood swashbucklers like Errol Flynn and Gene Kelly, as well as the rogue charm of Star Wars' Han Solo, his final appearance was determined by a unique process. The filmmakers brought a large focus group of women into the studio for a event famously called the "Hot Man Meeting," where they voted on the physical traits, hair styles, and facial features they found most appealing to craft the ultimate Disney leading man.
